Study Bibles Gifted to Incoming Bluefield University Students

by | Aug 28, 2025

Incoming traditional students at Bluefield University, including freshmen and transfers, received free study Bibles donated by the Southern Baptist Convention of Virginia (SBCV).

“Back in the spring, we met with a group of pastors to consider how churches in the Southwest Virginia area could support our ministry efforts at the University. Out of this meeting, a generous commitment to provide Bibles for the incoming class was presented to us,” said Corey Mullins, BU’s Vice President for Student Development & Athletics.

“Brad Russell, a pastor in Powatan, VA and the Missions and Compassion Ministries Strategist for the SBC of Virginia, coordinated the efforts to get the Bibles to campus. It has been a blessing to see congregations from all over the region invest in the spiritual development of our students. God continues to provide resources and relationships to serve the mission of Bluefield University,” Mullins added.

Each new student was given a CSB Everyday Study Bible in navy, black, or tan during orientation. The Bibles were distributed during Welcome Home Night on Monday, August 18, where students connected with student development staff, learned about residence life, and engaged in worship led by the campus ministries team.

“My time in college was incredibly formative for my life in Christ, and as a BU Dad and as an SBCV pastor and ministry leader, I am thrilled that SBCV churches could be a part of helping Bluefield give each incoming student what they need as the bedrock of a life-long relationship with Jesus—His Word,” Russell said.

At the first convocation of the academic year, President Steve Peterson reiterated Bluefield’s commitment to faith formation and spiritual growth in its students. The University’s theme for 2025-2026 is “Bold,” based on 2 Corinthians 3:12, “Since, then, we have such a hope, we act with great boldness” (CSB).

“As Dr. Peterson recently encouraged students to ‘live boldly in hope,’ the SBCV is thankful to be able to partner in offering a copy of God’s Word, a study Bible, to students and pray they will have a wonderful school year!” said Dr. Brian Autry, Executive Director of the SBCV.

“We are excited to see the Lord work in and through Bluefield administration, faculty, staff, and especially students this year,” Russell added. “Our hope is that every student at Bluefield will come to know, love, and trust Jesus and to live their lives boldly for Him.”
