by | Jul 24, 2025

Bluefield University hosted a graduation ceremony for its latest New Opportunity School for Women class on Saturday, July 12.

The New Opportunity School for Women (NOSW) is a free residential program designed for Appalachian women ready to take meaningful steps toward a new beginning. Students participate in a variety of classes and cultural enrichment activities that promote financial independence, personal growth, and career success. Courses include creative writing, Appalachian literature, public speaking, resume writing, basic accounting, and computer skills.

The class of 2025 included Jessica Bird, Delana Brantley, Casey Cantrell, Crystal Kinzer, Alyssa Mankins, Sabrina Wiley, and Sara Wroten.

The graduation ceremony began with greetings from Mily Lusk, the Executive Director of the NOSW at BU, and Dewey Lusk, BU’s head football coach. BU faculty emeritus Dr. Rob Merritt then shared the poem, “Life Is a Beautiful Ride: Sometimes You Have to Lose Yourself to Find Yourself,” featuring questions and answers from each class member. Afterward, graduates delivered speeches detailing the challenges they overcame and the role of the NOSW in shaping their futures. Speeches were prepared in conjunction with BU faculty emerita Dr. Cindy Bascom.

After a prayer from BU professor Brandy Smith and a lunch provided by Pioneer College Caterers, Co-Chair Crystal Kieloch brought greetings from the New Opportunity School for Women Foundation Board. Then, Betty Kuppusami of Patchwork Quilters unveiled a quilt featuring art from each graduate.

Executive Director Lusk presented the diplomas alongside BU’s chancellor and former president, Dr. David Olive, who was instrumental in the program’s arrival at Bluefield University in 2013.

Applications for the NOSW program at BU are accepted in April of each year ahead of the annual 10-day session in July. To apply or learn more, contact Mily Lusk at 276-356-5776 or [email protected].
