Assistant Professor – Counseling

The Counseling Program at Bluefield University is seeking applications for a full-time Assistant Professor. While all qualified candidate applications will be considered, those with an emphasis in both School Counseling and Clinical Mental Health will be preferred. Responsibilities will include teaching in the graduate counseling programs, advising students, and supervising practicum/internship students. Candidates are expected to provide service to the University, the School of Education and Social Sciences, and the profession. Specific teaching assignments for this position include teaching counseling courses in online and hybrid formats. Additional duties will include (but are not limited to) assisting with accreditation, participating in program and course development, assisting with admissions and recruitment, participating in new student orientation and welcome sessions, serving on faculty committees, and mentoring adjunct faculty members.

Faculty within the program must uphold the highest standards of professional standards, have robust clinical experience, be active in roles of leadership and/or advocacy within the profession, contribute to curriculum development, and demonstrate a passion for growing counselors-in-training. Additionally, faculty within the department are committed to each student’s success and willing to create individualized support to ensure their achievement within the program. Counseling faculty are innovative, seeking solutions, and are actively engaged in the ongoing quality improvement of the program.

Faculty are required to maintain the appropriate licensure, including all activities necessary to maintain such licensure, when teaching in programs that require its faculty to be licensed. They must also meet all requirements and expectations for faculty as described by any applicable accrediting organization with jurisdiction over the faculty’s program of record.

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in Counseling. Advanced ABD will be considered; the degree must be conferred by the time of appointment
  • Expertise in clinical mental health and school counseling
  • Certification or ability to be licensed as a professional counselor and/or school counselor
  • Experience or training in teaching, supervising, and advising counseling students,
  • Expertise with distance learning and instructional technology
  • Professional experience working with diverse populations (students or clients).
  • Travel to the face-to-face intensives (3 weekends during a 16-week term) and graduation is generally expected

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current or previous licensure as an LPC and/or a professional school counselor
  • Paid work experience as a professional school counselor and/or clinical mental health counselor
  • Experience with addiction counseling
  • Doctorate in Counseling and meets requirements of CACREP defined “core faculty”
  • Demonstrated community involvement in leadership, advocacy, or social justice roles
  • Membership and active involvement in professional counseling organizations
