Mud Pig Day is a long-standing tradition for the Bluefield University Rams, encouraging students to connect and unwind between the end of classes and the start of exams.
The Rams community will celebrate Mud Pig Day once again on Thursday, May 1, outside the campus’ Dome Gymnasium and Rish Hall. Event staples like a barbecue luncheon, a t-shirt tie dye station, and inflatables will return, as well as the traditional mud pit and iconic waterslide. Festivities will begin at 10 a.m.
According to Lighthouse on the Hill: The Bluefield College Story by Rev. David M. Armbrister, the first annual Mud Pig Day was held in 1974. Since the event was not held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year will mark the 50th Mud Pig Day celebration.
Leading up to the event, students competed in a t-shirt design contest. The winner and designer of this year’s Mud Pig Day t-shirt is Abbie Bradley.
Beyond Mud Pig Day, May 1 is a significant date for the university as it launches its annual Giving Day campaign, and the Theatre department hosts its first public performance of Finding Nemo JR.
This Giving Day, Bluefield University continues to promote its Blueprint for the Future initiative, emphasizing scholarship support, athletic excellence, capital improvements, and online expansion. Alumni and supporters can partner with the university in its mission to transform lives and “Build the Future” by visiting https://justgiving.com/campaign/bugivingday2025 or by mailing gifts to 3000 College Avenue, Bluefield, VA 24605.
Bluefield Youth and Community Theatre’s production of Finding Nemo JR. will open at 7:30 p.m. in Harman Chapel. Additional performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 2 and Saturday, May 3, and at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 4.
