Bluefield University Prepares Students for Music Ministry at Worship Camp

by | Aug 13, 2025

Bluefield University held Worship Camp, August 3-12, to prepare its worship arts students for music ministry during the university’s chapel services. Students were welcomed to campus on Sunday, August 3, before engaging in mentoring and training sessions on the following Monday and Tuesday afternoons.

The camp, led by Campus Pastor Mason West and worship arts professor Dr. Jeremy Yowell, emphasized practical and faith-based aspects of worship. Local worship leader Anthony Orr and audio engineer Corey Nunn walked students through serving from both the front of the room and behind-the-scenes.

“As we start the new school year, I’ve been reflecting with our worship teams on what the Bible teaches about worship,” Dr. Yowell said. “To me, worship involves genuine humility, loyal service, and reverent obedience to God. It’s both the attitude of our hearts and the actions of our daily lives, offered fully to the Lord as a living sacrifice. That’s the spirit we want to bring each week as we lead our campus family in chapel.”

Worship arts students lead the campus community in song at Wednesday morning chapel services. Ensemble members may also join other praise teams, including the Home worship team for Monday night services, and serve at community events, such as Winter Blast. Last year, students were invited to lead worship across the region at events such as Fields of Faith, a teen conference, and a young adult service.

“Worship leaders make music for an audience of one, keeping the focus solely on Jesus,” West said. “We want students to grow and use their talents, but more importantly, we want to guide them into the right heart posture so they can guide others into the right heart posture.”

On-campus students from any major are welcome to audition and may sign-up for an audition time by contacting [email protected].
