Known as thecollege’s Christmas gift to the Greater Bluefield community, “Christmas at Bluefield” is open and free to the public as an annual celebration of the birth of Christ through carols, drama, multimedia and scripture. The production features groups from BC’s Music and Theatre Departments, along with voices and instrumentalists from local churches and the community.
This year, more than 120 voices from BC’s Masterworks Chorale, Variations and Bluefield Singers, as well as choirs from First Baptist Church-Bluefield, Bland Street United Methodist Church, Trinity United Methodist Church, First United Methodist Church-Richlands, First Christian Church-Bluefield and Westminster Presbyterian Church will combine with 25 instrumentalists in BC’s Community Orchestra for a service of musical and dramatic portrayals of the Christmas story
“This is a wonderful opportunity for the campus and community at-large to come together to worship the Christ child,” said Bryant Moxley, head of BC’s Department of Music and musical director for ‘Christmas at Bluefield.’ “As we share our music, we pray that God will bless all those in attendance with a fresh awareness of the significance of the child whose birth we celebrate.”
Under the overall creative direction of Charles Reese, chair of BC’s Theatre Department, “Christmas at Bluefield” will also feature presentations from groups in BC Theatre. While the musical groups will perform traditional carols, spirituals, contemporary Christian songs, and new choral selections, the theatrical groups will offer dramatic interpretations of various portions of the Christmas story.
“The composer of ‘The Word Became Flesh’ is Dan Goeller, the same composer that wrote ‘In His Own Words’ that Bluefield College performed a few years ago,” said Charles Priest, assistant professor of music and director of the orchestra for ‘Christmas at Bluefield.’ “That alone should let people know how good this production is going to be.”
As always, the performances, both nights, December 1 and 3, will be followed by a reception for all in attendance inside Bluefield College’s Shott Hall. While free, the concert and reception do require a ticket for admission. Tickets are available in advance at all participating churches or by calling the BC Division of Fine Arts at 276-326-4248 or 276-326-4244.
“’Christmas at Bluefield’ is our gift to the campus community, alumni and residents of the region,” said Moxley. “Ultimately, it is our gift to God, a gift of praise and worship in response to His ultimate gift of the Christ child.”
