The Bluefield University Employee of the Month award honors faculty and staff for their professional excellence and servant leadership. Award recipients are nominated by their colleagues for their contributions and dedication to our campus community.
September 2024: Dr. Michael Salmeier, Provost & Chief Academic Officer
“From January to August this year, nobody wore more ‘hats’ than Michael Salmeier. He stepped into the role of interim president in the middle of a crisis and provided calm consistent leadership. He reminded us of our mission and pointed us back to our Source—Jesus. He certainly modeled servant leadership at BU this year.”
October 2024: Bethany Justis, Executive Assistant to the President
“Bethany was instrumental in leading, organizing, and executing Dr. Peterson’s inauguration activities, a significant milestone for Bluefield University. She managed this enormous task with precision and grace, ensuring that every detail was perfectly handled. In addition to the inauguration, Bethany coordinated all aspects of the Fall Board of Trustees meetings, which took place during an action-packed Homecoming week. What’s truly impressive is that Bethany accomplished all of this while managing her day-to-day responsibilities and other commitments—a remarkable feat given the critical role she plays within the university. Bethany’s efforts did not go unnoticed. She is a true rock star, always maintaining her sense of humor and positive attitude, even in the most challenging situations. Her dedication, hard work, and ability to juggle so many responsibilities make her more than deserving of this recognition.”
November 2024: Jacob Key, Associate Athletic Director
“Jacob works hard for our students and campus. He is always the first one to lift everyone else up, and I appreciate him so much. He deserves this!”
“He goes above and beyond for the students.”
“Since I have been at BU, I have watched Jacob wear many hats and do the best job at each of them. He is eager to jump right in and help anywhere that assistance is needed.”
December 2024: Judy Pedneau, Director of Human Resources
“Judy is the epitome of a servant leader. She leads with grace and dignity in every situation. Her faith and love for our Lord and Savior is displayed each day as she is always the first to offer to help others. Bluefield University is blessed to have her as part of the ‘Ramily!’”
“Since my first day at Bluefield University, she has been incredibly helpful and kind. She consistently provides gracious responses and is always willing to help in any way she can, making her a true blessing to our team!”
“She is very nice to everyone and considerate!”
January 2025: Dewey Lusk, Head Football Coach
“Dewey is available for his players 24/7. He helps his players succeed on and off the field, academically and mentally. He loves Bluefield University and is a testament to servant leadership. He is one of the biggest advocates for the college in the community. He loves his players. He always volunteers to help when help is needed on campus. He takes kids to the bus station in the middle of the night; he drives hours to get them to and from the airport. He feeds kids that have to stay on campus during breaks.”
February 2025: Kyle Hershey, General Maintenance Lead
“Kyle literally fixes almost everything on campus. He is very dedicated and goes the extra mile and beyond to get things done. I’m so grateful for how he serves our community with his many skills and brings a good attitude. He works diligently to assist and keep things running smoothly. He is always willing to help and did a great job during the storm clean up.
March 2025: Kristen Parker, Sports Information Director
“Kristen has gone above and beyond for our athletic programs. In the little time she has been here, there has been a significant improvement in her department that highlights all of our athletic programs.”
April 2025: Jennifer Lamb, University Registrar
“Over the last six months, Jennifer Lamb has taken on a great deal of additional work and responsibilities. She works extremely long days and has a lot of responsibilities; however, she is always willing to help out faculty, staff, and students in a positive and friendly way. Jennifer has gone above and beyond in her role.”
