Bluefield University to Host Summer Session of the New Opportunity School for Women Program

by | Jun 30, 2025

BLUEFIELD, Va. — This July, Bluefield University will host its annual summer session of the New Opportunity School for Women (NOSW), a free residential program designed to help Appalachian women break cycles of poverty and move toward financial independence, personal growth, and career success.

At Bluefield University, the NOSW program accepts applications in April of each year. This year’s session will be held July 2–12, 2025, on the university’s campus. Now in its 12th year at Bluefield, NOSW reflects the institution’s commitment to serving the region through education and outreach.

Targeted toward women who have faced economic hardship, limited educational access, or other personal challenges, the NOSW experience is designed for those ready to take meaningful steps toward a new beginning. Most participants are between the ages of 25 and 55 and have a desire to pursue higher education or enter the workforce with new skills and confidence.

Throughout the 10-day session, students will take part in courses including creative writing, Appalachian literature, public speaking, resume writing, basic accounting, and computer skills. They will also receive support navigating the college admissions process. The program also includes cultural enrichment activities such as concerts and theater events.

In addition to academic and professional training, NOSW offers personal development services, including career counseling, group reflection, health screenings, makeovers, and professional wardrobe support — all designed to foster confidence, self-worth, and a renewed vision for the future.

“There is no cost for women to attend,” said Mily Lusk, executive director of the program. “This is part of Bluefield University’s mission to serve the people of Appalachia by opening doors that might otherwise remain closed.”

Participants must be from the Appalachian region, have or be working toward a GED or high school diploma, meet low-income criteria, and have an interest in building a new career or pursuing higher education.

Founded in 1987 by Jane B. Stephenson at Berea College in Kentucky, the New Opportunity School for Women expanded to Bluefield University in 2013 as its third site. Since then, the Bluefield program has helped hundreds of women take the first steps toward a brighter future.
