Ethan Roberts, a senior in Bluefield University’s undergraduate psychology and human services program, recently worked with the Virginia Department of Corrections, completing an internship with District #43 Probation and Parole.
“Thanks to the combined support of Bluefield University, District #43, and the Southwest Virginia Workforce Development Board, Mr. Roberts has achieved outstanding success,” said Amanda Hughes, Office Services Supervisor for District #43.
This internship was sponsored by the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act and allowed Roberts to work alongside Nikki Elkins, a case manager for SWVA Works. Through his summer internship, he gained hands-on experience in the field of public safety, assisted with a resource fair at Southwest Virginia Community College, and earned credit toward his degree.
The opportunity was “indicative of the importance of partnerships with our community stakeholders,” Chief Probation and Parole Officer Chris Shortt said.
“Ethan shared that the experience was ‘such a blessing’ and helped guide his future career path,” Equal Opportunity Officer Rachel Patton shared on Facebook. “Through his internship, he discovered a passion for reaching the hearts of those who are often overlooked.”
