The Bluefield University School of Criminal Justice hosted several guest speakers this week, allowing students to connect with law enforcement officers, attorneys, and other justice administration professionals. Undergraduate students gained career insights, discussed internship opportunities, and learned about pathways to continue their education or training after graduation.

On Monday morning, United States Probation Officer Philip Cyrus spoke to two classes. Cyrus is a BU alumnus and currently serves in the Southern District of West Virginia.

Attorney Zachary Smith spoke to a class on Monday evening. Smith is another BU alumnus who received the Distinguished Young Alumnus of the Year award from the university in 2023. He currently serves at Buckland Law Firm in Pearisburg, Virginia.

Two representatives from the Appalachian School of Law—the Senior Admissions Director, Glenna Owens, and Dean of Students, The Honorable Will Thompson—visited on Wednesday morning. Together, Bluefield University and the Appalachian School of Law offer a 3+3 degree program that allows qualifying students to earn a bachelor’s degree and a Juris Doctor in as little as 6 years.

Finally, Gavin Scott spoke to students on Wednesday afternoon. Scott is a Senior Trooper for the Virginia State Police.
