The Bluefield University Music Department has been invited, yet again, to perform on the most renowned stage in New York — Carnegie Hall, a goal most musicians can only dream of.

The BU Music Department reached out to Distinguished Concerts International New York (DCINY) to ask to participate in one of its future concerts conducted by Craig Courtney, who Dr. Jeremy Yowell, professor of music and worship arts at BU, has a professional connection with.

“Because of my professional connection with Craig, DCINY extended an invitation for our choirs to participate,” Yowell said. “They recognized Bluefield University’s strong tradition of choral excellence and felt our involvement would enrich the program.”

Performing at Carnegie Hall is certainly one of the most exciting parts of a musician’s life if they get the chance. However, what is Yowell most excited about? Ministry.

“What excites me most is the opportunity for our students not only to sing on one of the world’s most iconic stages but also to minister in New York City,” Yowell said. “Being part of musical worship in such a diverse community is a powerful experience.”

Yowell also spoke about the valuable experience of performing at Carnegie Hall.

“I hope many students, alumni, and community members will take advantage of this opportunity,” he said. “It’s a once‑in‑a‑lifetime chance to share our music and faith in a way that connects across cultures and backgrounds. Each singer will carry these memories with them for the rest of their lives.”

So who is eligible for this unforgettable event?

“Participation is open to members of BU’s Masterworks Chorale, Variations ensemble, and select alumni singers,” Yowell said. “Interested students can register for one of the choirs for the upcoming semester and should speak directly with Dr. Yowell for guidance.”

And now the biggest concern: where will the funds for such a trip come from?

“The trip will be supported through a combination of student contributions, departmental fundraising, and generous gifts from donors who believe in the transformative power of this experience,” Yowell said.
