Ram Day is a time for incoming Bluefield University students to meet their professors, their classmates—and sometimes, their spouses. Devan Reeves and Maddie Thompson met at a Ram Day in May 2017 and will return to the Bluefield University campus nine years later to host their wedding reception.
“At Ram Day, we had first talked to each other in the library when we were declaring our major,” Maddie said. “The next stop was to get our student ID photos taken. The machine broke, so we were in line for two hours near each other and talking to each other. When we left, he asked for my number.”
Devan and Maddie began dating on June 15, 2017. After sharing four years as Bluefield University students and members of the Rams Track & Field team, they got engaged on February 5, 2022, and will tie the knot on June 13, 2026.

Devan earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 2020, concentrating in Management. In addition to competing in Track & Field, he was a member of the Men’s Golf team. In 2021, he completed a Master of Business Administration at BU, and he now serves as the Manager/Site Liaison for Lifepoint Business Solutions.
Maddie earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology in 2021, concentrating in Pre-Health. “Dr. Lambert did have a major influence on me and the trajectory of my career,” she shared.
Maddie also received the Marvin G. Williams Award for the Outstanding Biology Graduate for 2020-2021. She began teaching at Graham High School in the fall of 2021, securing a full-time position in 2022.
Now having completed their degrees and started their careers, Devan and Maddie are getting married just before their ninth anniversary. After the ceremony, they will celebrate their relationship where it first began.
“We met at BU, so it felt like a special place to have our reception,” Maddie explained.
