Dedicated to providing quality fine arts instruction to the community since 1993, BC’s Fine Arts Community School (FACS) is a community service outreach program that enables local families and students of all ages and interests, including home-schoolers, to explore and study the arts with the guidance of mentors and professionals who have appropriate training and experience.
More than 20 classes, workshops and lessons are available on the FACS schedule this spring, including Beginner Chess, Wheel-Thrown Pottery, Beginning Dance, Intermediate Dance, Beginning Photography, After-school Basic Art, Thinking with Sounds Music Class, Not a Dyeing Art, Intermediate Photography, Introduction to Art Therapy, Beginning Quilting, Beginning Media, Bridal Shower Etiquette, LadySafe Self Defense, The Hiding Place Youth Theatre, Shrek Youth Theatre, Love Birds Paint Night, Blue Ridge Mountains Paint Night, Fairy Tale Paint Night, Sunset Silhouette Paint Night, and Private Music Lessons, all detailed below.
Youth Theatre: The Hiding Place
· Rehearsals Monday through Friday, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., beginning January 11
· Performances February 23-26
· Ages: 12-18
· Tuition: $150
· Instructors: Charles Reese and Rebecca McCoy-Reese
· Join Bluefield College Youth Theatre in the presentation of The Hiding Place, a story of when the Nazis invaded Holland and Corrie Ten Boom’s quiet life turned into a nightmare because she made her home a “hiding place” for Jews, which landed her and her family in a concentration camp. Refusing to despair, Corrie discovered how God can turn loss to glory.
Beginner Chess Classes
· February 6-27
· Mondays 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
· Ages: all
· Tuition: $20
· Instructor: Eric Mason
· Learn how to identify each chess piece, how each piece moves, the rules of the game and how to play a complete game. Enhance your ability to think ahead, evaluate multiple alternatives, and anticipate consequences. This is a sport that will exercise the brain.
Wheel-Thrown Pottery Classes
· February 20 through April 10
· Mondays 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
· Ages: 14 and up
· Tuition: $125 + $15 materials fee
· Instructor: Norma Acord
· This course offers students an introduction to the potter’s wheel. Participants will experience basic methods of centering clay, forming cylinder and bowl forms, and trimming and adding handles. Students will also learn how to finish their pots using standard decorating and glazing techniques. No prior wheel experience required.
Beginning Dance Classes
· February 27 through April 24
· Mondays 4 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. for Ballet/Stretching
· Mondays 5 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. for Jazz/Contemporary
· Ages: 3-5
· Tuition: $60/class or $100 for both classes

Intermediate Dance Classes
· March 1 through April 26
· Wednesdays 4 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. for Ballet
· Wednesdays 4:45 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. for Contemporary/Modern
· Wednesdays 5:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. for Jazz
· Ages: 6 to adult
· Tuition: $50/class or $120 for all three classes

Beginning Photography Classes
· March 2-23
· Thursdays 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
· Ages: 14 to adults
· Tuition: $70
· Instructor: Hal Brainerd
· Students will learn about composition, artistic factors, backgrounds, exposure and contrast. The class will utilize lots of photographic examples with photography assignments that will help students become familiar with their camera and its controls.
Afterschool Basic Art Classes
· March 3 through May 12
· Fridays 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
· Ages: grades 1-8
· Tuition: $85
· Instructor: Marianne Jackson
· Students will explore different mediums, including collage, mixed media, oil pastel, drawing (pencil, crayon, marker and colored pencils) and acrylic paint, and will also learn through fun lessons and projects about color theory. Please bring a 8.5” X 11” sketchbook and a 14” X 20” portfolio.
Bridal Shower Etiquette Workshop
· Saturday, March 4
· 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
· Ages: 10 and up
· Tuition: $20
· Instructor: Charlotte Sacre
· The wedding season is just around the corner with lots of bridal showers on the schedule. Moms, bring your daughters for a refresher on etiquette for giving and attending bridal showers. From invitations to guest lists, come and enjoy being a “guest” at a “mock” bridal shower, complete with bride, and take home helpful tips.
Beginning Quilting Classes
· March 4-25
· Saturdays 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
· Ages: 14 and up
· Tuition: $80
· Instructor: Julie Fleischaker
· This introductory quilt making class will center on a project for a wall hanging or lap quilt pattern. The pattern will be provided with step by step instructions.
Thinking with Sounds Music Classes
· March 6-27
· Mondays 4 p.m. to 5:15 p.m.
· Ages: 8-14
· Tuition: $40
· Instructor: Dr. Alexa Schlimmer
· This class will focus on creating and experiencing music by music-reading, learning rhythms, looking at composer (old and new), different voice types, instruments of the orchestra and band, the elements of music, and music vocabulary. Music training has been found to be related to better language and mathematical skills, higher IQ and overall greater academic achievement. Brain regions – that are responsible for our hearing, sight and movement abilities – engage in an amazing symphony to produce music.
Beginning Media Classes
· March 6 through April 24
· Mondays 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
· Ages: 12 and up
· Tuition: $75
· Instructor: Blake Stowers
· This class will provide an in-depth study of how to run and operate a camera, study on air talent training for news reporters and anchors, and study directing and acting for film and television. Students will also learn how to run and manage a film set as a director and all the different roles involved in creating a movie or television project.
Love Birds Paint Night

Not a Dyeing Art Classes
· March 28 through April 25
· Tuesdays 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
· Ages: 8 to adult
· Tuition: $40 per person or $100 for up to five member families
· Have you ever dyed a Ukrainian Easter Egg? Are you interested in trying your hand at tie-dyeing? Curious about using natural dyes? Join this special class on dyeing techniques, including Ukrainian Pysanky egg dying, tie-dying, natural dying, and paper marbleizing.
Intermediate Photography Classes
· March 30 through April 27
· Thursdays 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
· Ages: 14 to adult
· Tuition: $95
· Instructor: Hal Brainerd
· Learn about proper lighting; exposure; composition; color calibration of monitors; high dynamic range, uploading, sorting, filing and backing up images; editing in RAW, editing with Nik Viveza software, and editing with Nik HDR software. Required equipment: digital camera and laptop computer with Photoshop Elements, Photoshop or Lightroom.
Youth Theatre: Shrek the Musical
· Rehearsals Monday through Friday, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., beginning April 3
· Performances May 18-21
· Ages: 6-18

· Join Bluefield College Youth Theatre in the presentation of Shrek the Musical, a story about an ogre named Shrek who lives in a swamp that is one day invaded by banished fairytale misfits who have been cast off by Lord Farquaad, a tiny terror with big ambitions. When Shrek sets off with a wisecracking donkey to confront Farquaad, he’s handed a task to rescue feisty Princess Fiona. He ends up winning her heart in this fairytale with lots of twists and turns along the way.
Blue Ridge Mountains Paint Night

LadySafe Self-Defense Workshop
· Saturday, April 15 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
· Or, Friday, May 5 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
· Ages: 13 and up
· Tuition: $25 or $40 for mother and daughter combo special
· Instructor: Melissa Bishop (third degree black belt)
· Violence can occur anywhere and at any time. In this workshop, ladies will be presented with a variety of information and self-defense strategies that could prove useful to them if they ever find themselves in a potentially violent encounter, including how to avoid attacks, the vital targets of the human body, our own personal arsenal of built in weapons, and self-defense techniques.
Introduction to Art Therapy Classes
· April 21-22
· Friday 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
· Ages: 17 to adults
· Tuition: $75
· Instructor: Dr. Robert Winter
· Art Therapy is the use of the creative arts to express and reflect on emotional states and is a therapeutic technique rooted in the idea that creative expression can foster healing and mental well-being.
Fairy Tale Paint Night
· Friday, April 28

Sunset Silhouette Paint Night
· Friday, May 12

· Ages: all
· Tuition: $30
· Instructor: Marianne Jackson
· Paint along with artist Marianne Jackson to create your own work of art that you will take home at the end of the workshop. Painting supplies and artist instructions provided. No art experience needed.
Private Music Lessons (banjo, mandolin, trumpet, flute, piano, voice, guitar)
· 30-minute lessons once each week for five or 10 weeks
· Days and times to be determined by student and instructor
· Ages: 5 and up (piano, voice), 10 and up (trumpet, flute), beginner to advanced (banjo, mandolin, guitar)
· Tuition: $190 (10-weeks) or $110 (five-weeks) + $25 registration fee
· Instructors: Ron Mullennex (banjo, mandolin), Dr. Alexa Schlimmer (piano, voice), Dr. Charles Priest (trumpet), Linda Flowers (flute), and James Lilly (guitar)
A $25 non-refundable registration fee and is due per student per class when registering for most BC Fine Arts Community School lessons and classes (but not workshops). If registering more than one person within a family, the registration fee is discounted to $15 per person.
In some cases, an additional supplies fee (i.e. art supplies) may be charged in addition to tuition. Tuition and fees are due by the start of instruction and may be mailed and made payable to Bluefield College, FACS, 3000 College Avenue, Bluefield, VA 24605. Payment plans are available.
