Technical Director & Audio-Visual Coordinator

PRIMARY PURPOSE/SCOPE 

The Technical Director will provide technical assistance to theatrical productions during the academic year and will provide technical management of the audio-visual needs in Harman Auditorium and other venue locations on campus.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND FUNCTIONS

The essential duties, responsibilities, and functions of Technical Director include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Responsible for all construction needs for approximately 5 theatrical productions during the academic year
  • Responsible for supervising student work crews.
  • Teamwork and collaboration skills.
  • Establishes or adjusts work procedures to meet University and/or project schedules.
  • Suggests changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of employees and work crews.
  • Required attendance for this position is for the employee to be present at work and on-site.
  • Analyzes and resolves work problems or assists workers in solving work problems.
  • Initiates or suggests plans to motivate workers to achieve work goals.
  • Complies with all rules, policies, and procedures as established by Bluefield University.
  • Interprets University policies to employees and enforces safety regulations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.  

MARGINAL DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND FUNCTIONS

The marginal duties, responsibilities, and functions of the Technical Director include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Serves on various University-wide committees as assigned.
  • Represents the University at meetings with University employees and/or external persons and agencies as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE 

  • Must be proficient with theatrical set and property construction.
  • Lighting and sound experience a must.
  • Proficiency with CAD software preferred
  • BA or BFA in technical theatre preferred. At least BA required.
  • Demonstrated success building relationships, programs and services between diverse internal constituencies.
  • Must be a thoughtful and articulate Christian, an active member of a mainstream Christian church, and must demonstrate the ability to integrate a Christian perspective in their work.
  • Must understand the stated mission of Bluefield University.

 KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Working knowledge of standard power tools used in set construction
  • Working knowledge of current theatrical building techniques
  • Working knowledge of sound and lighting systems.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail
  • Logical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to multi-task

Familiarity with office practices and procedures, including computer systems, computer software electronic mail, and internet.  Experience with Microsoft Office software including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.

Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.

Ability to maintain good rapport with faculty, staff and students.

ERGONOMIC REQUIREMENTS

Physical Demands

  • The physical demands described here are representative of those required in moderately heavy construction work.  Applicant must be able to stand, bend, and lift at least 40 pounds.  Applicant must be comfortable climbing ladders and stairs and must be a licensed driver.  This position is a physically demanding job.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Specialized Equipment Requirements

  • The use of specialized equipment listed here is representative of equipment an employee may encounter while performing the essential functions of this job.  Applicant should be comfortable using the following:  circular saw, table saw, jig saw, drills, drivers, air compressor, and electric welder (preferred).   Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions

Working Conditions and Environment

  • The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the duties, responsibilities, and functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the duties, responsibilities, and functions.  This position has no specific working conditions; the work environment is typical to that of a small private University, with physical remote site locations within 50 miles of  Bluefield University, VA.

 The qualification standards of the Technical Director include, but are not limited to, the following:

  2. Professional appearance and presentation in the working environment (including business casual attire).

Campus housing is included as a taxable benefit.
