Under the supervision of the Director of Athletics, the primary purpose of the Head Men’s Soccer Coach is to manage the men’s soccer program and provide direction to the athletes included within the program, while fostering and maintaining fiscal responsibility.
The primary duties of the Head Men’s Soccer Coach consist of instructing athletes in the fundamentals and the performance of the sport of men’s soccer as well as teaching, tutoring, mentoring and coaching student athletes. In addition, as leaders of this sport, the coach exercises discretion and judgment in decisions affecting the student athletes and the employees of their department.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND FUNCTIONS
The Head Men’s Soccer Coach reports to the Athletic Director and is responsible for the following areas:
- Departmental Administration (15%):
- Leads a men’s soccer program that is in harmony with and supportive of the institutional mission and philosophy of Bluefield University.
- Prepare and maintains a budget and controls inventory of men’s soccer equipment.
- Develops men’s soccer schedule with the Director of Athletics
- Works with the athletic trainers and medical health services to insure the safety and well-being of the student athletes
- DAB – Coordinates the production of all athletic broadcasts, connecting with other departments and positions to ensure appropriate marketing and access of each broadcast. Reports all score results to the proper media outlies and to the Sports Information Director
- Provides recommendations for rewards for deserving athletes.
- Complies with all rules, policies and procedures as established by Bluefield University, the NAIA, NCCAA and AAC.
- Interprets University policies to employees and enforces safety regulations.
- Complies with regular attendance at the University during regular scheduled days and work hours
- Teaching/Coaching (50%):
- Organizes and conducts practice sessions with student athletes .
- Instructs, teaches, and coaches student athletes on how to perform for competitive soccer games and also during practice.
- Provides tutoring and mentoring of athletes involved in the soccer program.
- Monitors and supervises student athletes while at practice and while traveling to ensure their conduct is reflective of the mission of the University.
- Recruiting (30%)
- Identify, evaluate and recruit potential team members to Bluefield University
- Possesses the knowledge of eligibility requirements and provide and maintain a list of eligible athletes.
- Retain current BC students as team members
- Ensures that program meets annual membership requirements
- Ensures that program recruiting activities adhere to University policies and procedures.
- Other Duties (5%):
- Provides reports and documentation when required by the Director of Athletics
- Possesses the ability to plan, organize, prioritize, and implement work, and be able to apply logic and creativity in order to solve problems and deal with mathematical and financial aspects.
- Possesses the ability to receive, process and provide visual and verbal information
- DAB – supervises, mentors, teaches and instructs various students and staff as appropriate for athletic broadcasts.
- CAB – marketing broadcasts and generating interest in each event.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND FUNCTIONS
This position directly supervises any assistant, volunteers and student workers who are assigned to the men’s soccer program, and carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the University’s policies and applicable laws. Supervisory duties, responsibilities, and functions include interviewing, hiring, training and mentoring employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints; and resolving problems.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
The individual must possess the knowledge, skills and ability to demonstrate, explain and perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some combination of the following skills and abilities:
- Must be able to support the Mission Statement, purpose and goals of the University and express a personal Christian commitment.
- Must possess a minimum of a B.S/B.A Degree.
- Must possess a current and working knowledge of NAIA regulations.
- Must possess a minimum of three to five years’ experience in coaching and/or teaching
- Must possess sufficient manual dexterity to be able to operate all equipment including but not limited to: copy machines, computers, faxes, scanners, telephones as well as specialized equipment typically found in a modern athletic office environment.

Specific vision abilities required by the job include ability to distinguish the nature of objects by using the eye. The operation of vehicles and the transportation of athletes are duties that are required at various times. Tasks such as working at a computer which involves extensive wrist and hand movements are also required.
