Job Summary/Basic Function
The Director of Business Intelligence oversees the business intelligence operations for Bluefield University. The Director will be instrumental in:
- The verification of data systems, data integrity, and data and reporting accuracy.
- The implementation of a data warehouse for collecting, organizing, structuring and storing data as a strategic asset for Bluefield University.
- Creating dashboards and reporting to inform and support strategy and decisions of institutional stakeholders.
The Director of Business Intelligence functions as an integral part of the Bluefield University IT department. The primary purpose of this position is to transform accurate raw data into actionable decision making and strategic planning tools. This position works closely with other stakeholders to develop technical requirements and comprehensive solutions to extract and transform data from multiple source systems for business use. The ideal candidate understands the importance of balancing customer requirements/feedback while also performing data analysis using various tools and techniques.
- Working with service providers and Bluefield stakeholders the Director of Business Intelligence analyzes and advises management regarding workflow issues and data integrity problems and offer recommendations on resolution; documents business processes; researches best practices and supports development of solutions for current business operations; develops actionable recommendations to department and business units; and provides expert opinion on functional business topics.
- Understands Bluefield University systems including Canvas LMS, Jenzabar SIS, Salesforce CRM, and external data sources from marketing partners. Able to summarize and describe raw data sets for departmental consumption. Supports validation processes that profile data attributes against their intended meaning
- Positively and skillfully influences peers, colleagues, leaders, and business partners to collaborate and deliver consistent quality results.
- Performs analysis of data that aligns to organizational goals and relays business impacts of findings through sound data driven recommendations. Operationalizes key findings, insights, and recommendations. Develops tools to speed and automate the production of dashboards, complex models, and analyses.
- Works closely with the business units with a high degree of customer service and provides input on functional business topics. Uses critical thinking to triage escalated issues and provide customer focused service delivery, satisfying stakeholder needs and assessing options for value-add.
- Assists the business unit in streamlining business processes using new or current technology, including form and reporting development. Helps to define internal development and publication standards. Understands and uses the principles of data quality management, including metadata, lineage, and business definitions to implement data governance procedures and policies.
- Provides operational support to assigned business units systems, including assistance with technical issues. Takes ownership of systems that are supported by their team.
- Provides regular updates to customers on business process improvement and new technology activities. Supports training, communication, and development of new policies. Reviews outstanding requests and assigns work as appropriate. Assists the department leadership with the interviewing process, daily coordination of duties, projects, and tasks.
- Responsible for the day-to-day quality control and maintenance of the Bluefield University Datawarehouse (BUD). This includes putting in place strong data governance procedures, regular quality control audits, and daily master data management (“MDM”) tasks. In addition, this position is responsible for regular reporting and ad hoc analysis requests.
- Oversees daily operations and maintenance, including system/content administration, server administration, data modeling (conceptual, logical, physical), change management, configuration management and all other applicable IT controls.
- Ongoingly maintains service documentation – e.g. Business Continuity /Disaster Recovery Plans, Architecture, Procedures, etc.
- Designs Enterprise Data Warehousing solutions.
- Maintains organizational balance and system coherency between front-end desktop/client environment and data warehouse back-end processing functions.
- Provides guidance regarding the use of data warehouse systems, capability of systems to deliver information, and subject matter expertise regarding current systems and emerging technology.
- Works with business stakeholders across lines of business to evaluate requirements, potential solutions and prioritize core platform features.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position may directly supervise other employees.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) from a four-year college or university;
- Experience using Power BI and report writing tools;
- Experience optimizing business processes;
- Experience testing and maintaining core enterprise systems to ensure they are meeting operational needs;
- 2-3 years of SQL experience required, or an equivalent combination of classroom and experience;
- Experience using MS Excel and Access;
- Approximately 2-3 years of related experience required, or an equivalent combination of classroom and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- The right candidate will have in-depth experience with data warehouse tools, Database Management Systems (DBMS) and an innovative/energetic mindset focused on delivering business value through collecting, organizing, structuring, and storing data as a strategic asset;
- Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing to convey clear, well-articulated information;
- Ability to understand, speak, and write English in order to convey messages and correspond in an articulate and professional manner;
- Possess public communication skills that allow professional representation of Bluefield College to a variety of business and community customers and associates;
- Strong organizational skills;
- Ability to act as team lead and coordinate multiple individuals for effective collaboration.
- Excellent computer skills;
