The Mission of the Bonner Scholars and Bonner Leaders Program is to transform the lives of students and members, the life of
their campuses, their local communities, and the world through the service and leadership. To achieve this vision, the Bonner Foundation provides service-scholarships to approximately 1,700 members annually. The Bonner Scholarship is designed to heighten the overall education students and members receive by asking them to engage in ongoing service work and helping them develop the tools and knowledge necessary to make that work meaningful and lasting.
Bluefield College was invited to become an AmeriCorps Bonner Leader School by the Corella and Bertram F. Bonner Foundation in the spring of 2001. The first class of AmeriCorps Bonner Leaders began their service in the fall of 2001. The two-year program combines summer employment, off campus employment during the academic year, training in leadership and service, and a post-service AmeriCorps Education Award. Bluefield College has six of these two-year positions in which students commit to completing 900 hours of community service. Each year Bluefield College hopes to add another four students to this program until there are approximately forty-five Bonner Leader Students on campus.
