Eight Harpists to Perform at BC

Eight harpists will perform together in concert at Bluefield College May 24 in the very first concert of its kind in Greater Bluefield.

BC music instructor Colleen Potter Thorburn will be one of eight harpists to perform during Bluefield Harp Day, May 24.

The central event of the day will be a concert at 4 p.m. in Bluefield College's Harman Chapel, during which time the eight performers will present a varied program of harp solos, duets, and large ensemble works. As a particular highlight of the concert, harpists Heidi Morey of Fayetteville, West Virginia, and Mark Owen Martin of Nitro, West Virginia, will premiere the “Bluefield Suite” for two harps, an original composition written for Bluefield Harp Day by Mark Owen Martin.

In addition to Morey and Martin, other harpists on the program include Colleen Potter Thorburn, instructor of music at Bluefield College, who is facilitating the harp event; Laurel Thompson and Wilma Hatcher of Bluefield, West Virginia; Kariana Ramsey of Fayetteville, West Virginia; Donna Dunford of Tazewell, Virginia; and Julia Fallon of Blacksburg, Virginia.

“This first-ever Bluefield Harp Day will showcase student, amateur, adult, and professional performers from the Bluefields and beyond,” said Thorburn, who also plays harp with the duo Apple Orange Pair, “and it will feature lever and pedal harp solos and group ensemble performances.”

A harp “petting zoo” for the public will also take place in Harman Chapel prior to the concert, from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The petting zoo will offer the Bluefield community the unparalleled opportunity to see several harps in one location and to interact personallywith each of the performers prior to the concert.

The concert will be followed by a reception in BC’s Shott Hall. All events are open and free to the public. For more information, please contact Thorburn by phone at 276-326-4258 or by e-mail at .
