Bluefield College Receives 1 Million Dollar Challenge GrantOn Friday night April 20th, Bluefield College transformed their Dome from an athletic facility into a setting of elegant dining to host their First Evening of Philanthropy. This event has been created to allow the College to thank its supporters, showcase new college initiatives and provide attendees the opportunity to experience a regionally recognized speaker Kyle Hauth on the subject of philanthropy. The real excitement for the evening was when Dr. David Olive, President, along with Julie Johnson, and Mr. R.W. “Buz” Wilkerson announced that the Hugh I. Shott, Jr. Foundation has approved a $1,000,000 Challenge grant to Bluefield College for Phase 1 of its Campus and Community Wellness Center. “This is a significant and transformational gift for Bluefield College, according to David Olive the college has never received such a challenge opportunity of this kind”.
Phase 1 of the Campus and Community Wellness Center is a $4,000,000 project. The College hopes through this generous gift of the Hugh I. Shott Foundation, Jr. to reach this project goal with gifts and pledges by December 31st of this year. This phase will include multiple locker rooms and an entire area dedicated to a cardio and weight training center. See naming opportunities to find out more. The complete Bluefield College Campus and Community Wellness Center facility is designed to be built in three phases to include: a cardio and weight training center, multiple locker rooms, a new competitive gymnasium for seating up to 1,000 spectators, recreation gymnasium, indoor walking track, multi-use classrooms, coaches’ offices and a natatorium. The facility will have approximately 60,000 square feet. The total cost of all three phases is $14 million. The Campus and Community Wellness Center is the center piece project of our Capturing the Imagination Campaign which is the largest campaign in the college’s history with a goal of $20 million dollars. To date over $11 million dollars has been raised through- this comprehensive campaign for Bluefield College, great success has been experienced in soliciting gifts for the college’s endowment, annual giving, new academic and athletic programs, and renovation/enhancements of existing campus facilities.
