Songwriting I, taught by David Pedde (worshipmentor.com), is for beginning to intermediate songwriters looking to start or kick-start their songwriting craft. Foundational elements of music will be unpacked including, compositional technique, form study, melody & lyric construction, and harmonic & rhythmic treatment. Each student will receive coaching in various musical styles, with each class comprised of lectures and song performances with instructor/peer evaluations. The final class will include public song presentations in an open-mic setting.
Four Weekends (Friday 6 to 9 PM, Saturday 9 AM to 3 PM)
. January 24-25
. February 28-29
. March 13-14
. April 3-4
Classes will focus on the fiddle and banjo tunes (with songs, in some cases) that comprised the traditional music repertory of the Central & southern Appalachian region prior to the advent of radio and recorded music. Instruction in the traditional style is available for fiddle, banjo, and guitar accompaniment. Mandolin players interested in the old fiddle tunes are welcome, too!
Instruction will be by Ron Mullennex. Ron has played the music for over 50 years, having learned directly from the older generation of fiddlers and banjo players in West Virginia and Southwest Virginia. He has won numerous contest awards, taught many times at the Augusta Heritage Workshops at Davis & Elkins College, and received a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Tazewell County Old-Time Fiddlers’ Convention. His music is featured on several anthologies as well as his own and the band “Gandydancers” recordings. His music and influence have been discussed in a “Banjo Newsletter” article (April 1999) by Bates Littlehale.
Lessons available for bass, banjo, drums, flute, guitar, harp, mandolin, piano, trumpet, violin, recorder, and voice.
Linda Flowers, Alandra Blume Hinkle, Vince Lewis, Staley Lyle, Dr. John Moir, Dr. Charles Priest, and Laurel Thompson
