With a degree in English from a Christian Liberal Arts college, you will be prepared to think critically about the world around you, especially in the world of writing and literature. If you have a passion for writing, whether it be fiction or non-fiction, this program may be for you. If you enjoy reading the great authors in history, then you can continue to do so at Bluefield College in the English department.
At Bluefield, we have two different areas in which you may study (called concentrations) in our English program: Writing and Literature. No matter what your passion is in the world of English, you can pursue it here.
There are also ways that you can take what you’re learning in the classroom and integrate it outside of the classroom. Whether it is working with the Bluestone Review (an annual publication put out on campus, comprised of various types of writing, art, and other creative accomplishments) or helping out other students by being a tutor in the Academic Center for Excellence’s English Writing Lab, you can pursue your passions outside of the classroom by contributing to campus.
The English program at Bluefield offers courses in World Literature and the literatures of other countries and cultures. Students are exposed to a variety of cultural values, preparing them to work in our increasingly global society. In addition, the English major emphasizes critical thinking and communication, two skills vital for relating to the larger world. Many of our English majors have chosen to participate in our Chinese exchange program and other study abroad programs. Students have also participated in domestic programs for increasing global awareness at The Chicago Center for Urban Studies.
You also may have the opportunity to take part in the English Honor Society at Bluefield College. ΣΤΔ is the International English Honor Society. Bluefield’s ΑΚΛ chapter members have participated in programs such as World Book Night. Members have also had papers accepted to the International ΣΤΔ Convention, an excellent opportunity to network both with students from around the country and with representatives of various graduate programs. In addition, members have the opportunity to submit articles and creative work to two ΣΤΔ journals, and to apply for leadership positions and scholarships through the program.
No matter what you decide to do with a major in English, your time at Bluefield College will be well spent. You will spend time with professors that genuinely care about you and want you to succeed. You will be able to make connections with others that will benefit you for the rest of your life.
