Psychology is defined as “the study of behavior and mind.” To many, the study of this field is one that is intriguing. Whether you want to major in psychology, minor in the subject, or just take some psychology classes with your elective credits, learning more about the mind and behavior is something that will benefit you later in life, no matter what vocation you end up following.
One great thing about the field of psychology is that it can benefit you, no matter what career path you decide to take. Knowing about the human mind and behavior will help you as you go into the workforce and start to work alongside others to accomplish goals. You’ll need to be able to be a team player, come together with people who are very different than you, and complete tasks. By knowing more about the mind and behavior of others, you’ll be well equipped to perform these job functions.
While many schools, no doubt, offer psychology as a major, being at a smaller school will help in ways that you might not see at a larger institution. At Bluefield College, the average class size is around 15 students and we boast a student to teacher ratio of approximately 14 to 1. However, once you get into your major, the class sizes can become even smaller, allowing more one on one interaction with the professor. In some of our major-specific classes (such as an upper level psychology course), there may be as few as 7 or 8 students in a single classroom. Throughout your college career, you will be thinking about graduate school, potential jobs, and internships. No matter which one of these you decide to go for, you will need recommendations. With smaller class sizes, you will know your professors on a personal level (and they’ll know you). They will know your skills, your abilities, and your personality. They will be able to write very personalized recommendations that will help you out whenever applying for these things.
100% of our Psychology faculty have their PhD, which means that no matter which class you are taking, you are sure to know that your professor will have his or her terminal degree in their field of study. Some of the different courses that you will have the opportunity to take are:
So, if you are looking for a small, private school that will allow you to fulfill your potential and learn in a nurturing environment, then Bluefield College may be for you. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact our Admissions Office at
