Is a Degree in Exercise and Sport Science a Good Fit For You?

At Bluefield College, student athletes make up over 60% of our student population. This means that over half of our students are working on a daily basis to better themselves both in the classroom and on the field. Many of our students have a passion for athletics and many times, this passion translates to their major.

Exercise and Sport ScienceBluefield College’s Exercise and Sport Science Major is one of the most popular on campus. Whether the end goal is physical therapy, athletic training, or pursuing the business side of sports with Sport Management, the Exercise and Sport Science program at Bluefield College will help the student prepare him or herself for a successful and rewarding career.

With an average class size of 15 and a student to faculty ratio of 13:1, Bluefield College students will get an experience in the class that is more focused than they might get at another institution. Because of our size, students are able to have one-on-one relationships with professors that will benefit them later on in their careers.

Whether it is learning the athletic training aspect of Sport Science in a hands-on environment in one of our many Exercise and Sport Science labs alongside Dr. Minnix, Department Chair for ESS, or learning about the business side of sports under Professor Kevin Downer, Chairman of the Sport Management program, you will be more than prepared for your field of study when you leave campus.

While it’s great to know about the program itself and about the professors and curriculum (which can be found on the ESS website by clicking here), it is also important to know what former students are saying about the program! Here are just a couple of statements from former Exercise and Sport Science majors at Bluefield College:

Amber MacDonald
Class of 2012

"The Bluefield College Exercise and Sport Science Department is under outstanding leadership. Not only are the teachers experts in their fields, but they are also Christian leaders. Currently, I am doing cancer research at the University of Tennessee, where I am pursuing a master’s degree in Cellular Molecular Nutrition. There is no doubt that I would not be in this position today if it were not for the outstanding Exercise and Sport Science faculty who encouraged me to follow my passion, and most importantly, what God has planned for my life!"

Tabatha Robbins
Class of 2010

“I loved my time at Bluefield College! Dr. Minnix and Dr. Bryan are simply wonderful professors! They pushed me to achieve excellence and not to give up the first time I applied for but was denied entrance to physical therapy school. Thanks to them, I also gained valuable internship experiences in the community, working hands-on with wonderful physical therapists. Also, they mentored me and guided me during my tenure at Bluefield College.”
