“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” – 1 Peter 4:10. Jesus was brought to this earth to serve others and has given us the calling to be servants. A Christian college can give you a lot of opportunities to get involved around campus and also in the community. A surprise for most students is that many Christian campuses have Greek organizations, though they are generally campus-specific and volunteer-focused. Being a part of the Greek Life organizations will help you branch out in the community and get involved with different activities to help give back to the local area. Giving back helps plant a seed in the community and also sheds God’s grace to others.
Apart from community-focused Greek organizations, most Christian colleges have a center of service where you can go and search for opportunities to serve others in the community. Often time Christian colleges take groups of students on mission trips either locally or internationally in an effort to help those communities grow spiritually. Some classes may even go out in the community to a nursing home or hospital to preach the gospel to those people or take part in other activities with them.
There are a number of other ways that Christian colleges help students find opportunities to give back. Many campuses allow students to get involved with campus beautification crews to help plant flowers throughout campus, mulch the flower beds, or pick up trash. There are also opportunities for students to become tutors for subjects like math, English, or the sciences. Other opportunities include helping students on campus with physical limitations or becoming a member of one of the numerous service-minded organizations on campus. With that being said, we as Christians are called to be servant leaders and give back to others as Jesus gave His life for us.
Helping others can be a hard task at times, as it means having to put forth time and resources of your own so you can give back to others. Things may get in the way, like homework, Netflix, hobbies, and even just “me-time.” However, we as Christians have a calling to serve and to spread the light of Jesus Christ. We need to magnify His love towards others whether that is with our immediate family or with our communities. We need to step out of our comfort zone and do what it is that God is calling us to do. John 12:46 says, “I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness.” We are to lift the shades up and let His light shine in our rooms so that our hearts may be filled with His love.
