A Christian Liberal Arts Education?

Christian liberal arts, grants and scholarships, liberal arts, reasons to attend a Christian college, student blogs, Christian StudiesWhen I first set out to apply for colleges, I had several things to think about. I had to decide if I wanted to go in state or out of state or to a local college, decide my major, and whether or not I could afford where I wanted to go. I wanted to be a commuter. So that limited my decision to three local colleges. My first choice was one that both my parents went to, my second was the college my sister went to, and the third was Bluefield College. I had driven past Bluefield College almost my entire life, but had never considered it before. At that point in my life I knew I felt a call into ministry, but I didn’t know what I wanted my bachelor’s degree to be before entering into ministry. My pastor/mentor encouraged me to check out more of Bluefield College’s Christian Studies department. So I did some research. During my research I found out that Bluefield College was a liberal arts college, and that’s when my pastor directed me to look into what a Christian liberal arts education was.

My first question was: What is a Liberal Arts Education? From my research, I learned that in today's time the liberal arts education are now found in the area of language, art, history, music, philosophy, mathematics, psychology, and science. But what is a Christian liberal arts education? At this point I decided to take a personal campus tour and talk with a few of the professors at Bluefield College. Let's just say that as soon as I walked onto campus I found a place to call home, a place that was the perfect Christ-centered community, a place that welcomed me with an open heart and mind. When I went through campus, I met students who encouraged a Christian education and I met two professors who now have shaped my viewpoints of ministry. These were Christian Studies professors who helped me choose to become a Christian Studies major.

Now that I had decided to attend a liberal Christian arts institution, I had one last question to answer. Could I afford it? I knew I had several scholarships already, but I had always heard that private Christian colleges were expensive. But thanks to Bluefield College, I could afford it. They gave me several opportunities and scholarships to make it possible. They also gave me the opportunity to be the team manager for the women’s basketball team. When I made the choice to attend Bluefield College, I not only decided to attend a college, I decided to become a committed individual to one of the best liberal Christian arts colleges out there. In my first semester I have already experienced a transforming college opportunity like no other.

One thing you’ll learn about Bluefield College is that they offer a Christ-centered community campus. They offer this through classes, chapel services, and through students and faculty. Finally, they also have a yearly scripture. This year’s scripture is Romans 12:12: “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, and faithful in prayer.” Bluefield College has helped me be joyful in the decision that I made, and through faithfulness in prayer, God led me to my home here. I am beyond happy to be a part of not only a liberal arts college, but a campus family full of the love of Christ!
