Women's Basketball team loses opener to Cumberlands 76-54 By Sports Information Department BC | November 2, 2011 | RSS Bluefield College Athletics Sports Information Department Bluefield, Virginia The women's basketball team opened their 2011-2012 season with a non-conference loss to the University of the Cumberlands on Tuesday night at the Dome Gymnasium 76-54. Bluefield struggled early on shooting only 27 percent in the first half from the floor. The Lady Rams fought hard in the opening 20 minutes as they trailed by seven going into the break, 31-23. In the second half, the Rams would begin to heat up defensively as Bluefield's Tolliver brought some much-needed intensity to the court. Unfortunately, the short run didn't last long enough, as the outside shooting of the Cumberlands killed Bluefield late in the second half. Cumberlands shot 8 for 9 from behind the arc, led by senior sensation Lauren Wombles who scored 26 points in the game. (#9 in the nation in PPG) Bluefield's Kia Gillard brought the only real consistency for the Lady Rams as she contributed 22 points and 6-7 from the FT line. The rest of the team only made nine total field goals on the night. The Lady Rams will bounce back after the tough loss by hosting the annual Wendy's Classic this weekend at the Dome Gymnasium as they will first play Allen University on Friday night at 8:00 pm.
