Prospective college students are invited to visit Bluefield College as part of Virginia Private College Week, Monday, July 24 through Saturday, July 29.

Bluefield College is one of 24 colleges participating in the statewide event sponsored by the Council of Independent Colleges in Virginia (CICV). As part of the activities, all 24 CICV colleges will host open house sessions for prospective students and their families.

The open house sessions at Bluefield College will be held Monday through Saturday, July 24-29, at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Each session will include a campus tour, admissions session, and student forum during which time visiting students will have the opportunity to ask current students questions about residence life, academics, athletics, and other topics.

An annual event organized by the CICV -- an association of independent colleges and universities working together to promote awareness of Virginia’s private higher education -- Virginia Private College Week is designed to introduce prospective students to the opportunities and benefits available at a Virginia private undergraduate college, like BC, a Christ-centered liberal arts college in the scenic mountains of southwest Virginia.

“Virginia Private College Week is an event the BC family looks forward to each year,” said Scott Polhamus, a BC traditional admissions counselor. “It is a wonderful event that allows students to see the fine educational opportunities they have access to throughout our Commonwealth.”

Evan Sherman, director of traditional admissions, added that every member of the family benefits by attending Virginia Private College Week. He shared how families learn not only how affordable a private college education can be, but also the process to achieve it. He also spoke about the value of a private liberal arts college that enables students to do more than just prepare for a career; it equips them, he said, to think critically beyond their major field of study.

“At Bluefield College, we have a core curriculum that is built to help students go through a series of classes which makes them think of who they are as an individual and their place in the world,” said Sherman, who also spoke about the diverse experience students have while attending Bluefield College, despite its small size.

Students planning to visit the BC campus are encouraged to register prior to the event at www.bluefield.edu/visit or by contacting the BC Admissions Office by phone at 800-872-0176 (x4272) or by email at . Students who visit at least three CICV institutions during Virginia Private College Week will receive three application fee waivers. Students may use the waivers to apply to any three participating colleges for free. In addition, students visiting at least three institutions will also be eligible for a drawing for a $500 Amazon gift card.
