BARBOURSVILLE, Ky. — Four Rams finished in double figures led by Byron Carpenter's 21 points, but the Bulldogs' used the free-throw line to their advantage in the second half to take a 79-71 opening round victory in the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament.

Union was 22-of-31 at the line in the second half and 30-of-43 overall while Bluefield attempted only 14 free throws and made eight.
Marcus Jackson and Rob Wright each added 11 points for the Rams. Brian Daniels finished with 10 points.
Ian Daivs led the Bulldogs with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Turrell Morris grabbed 17 boards and scored 12 points for a double-double. Stuart Stamper had 16 points while Ryan Young chipped in with 12.
Bluefield, which could still get a berth to the NCCAA tournament, dropped to 11-18.
