Travis Weaver signs professional baseball contract By Sports Information Department BC | August 5, 2011 | RSS Bluefield College Athletics Sports Information Department Bluefield, Virginia Earlier this week, former Rams baseball standout Travis Weaver signed a professional baseball contract with the Lake County Fielders of the North American League. Weaver has been immediately activated for the Fielders and in his first game, he started at shortstop and went 1 for 3 in his debut. Weaver in his debut earlier this week While at Bluefield College, Travis was a staple for Coach White's lineup. T-Weav's career including a junior season averaging a hefty .321 batting average and 30 RBI's and a senior campaign highlighted by a .292 batting average, 30 RBI and a HR. Weaver joins one of NAL's most popular teams in the Fielders. The Lake County Fielders are part of the newly formed independent North American League and represent Lake County's only professional sports team. Interestingly enough, the team is owned in part by long-time baseball fanatic and Academy award-winner Kevin Costner. The North American League was formed just back in 2010. The independent league play level is considered AA to AAA, the alumni of the three founding leagues (Golden, Northern and United) have seen over 40 of their group reach the major leagues over the years and another 35 players had their contracts purchased by MLB organizations in 2010 alone. In 2010-2011, the Rams struggled early on in the season but put together an incredible late season run to get back to .500, giving the team an opportunity to reach the NCCAA World Series once again. Coach White and staff will look to reload its lineup for the new season after a large contigent of graduating players from the team.
