Teachers Invited to Cyber Literacy Workshop

Local secondary school teachers are invited to learn more about integrating cyber into the classroom through a workshop on the campus of Bluefield College, Thursday and Friday, June 14-15.

Offered free of charge in partnership with the Cyber Innovation Center of Louisiana and its National Integrated Cyber Education Research Center (NICERC), the cyber literacy workshop will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Board Room on the third floor of BC’s Lansdell Hall. Lunch will be provided each day.

The workshop will provide teachers with the opportunity to learn strategies for integrating cyber into their curriculums. During the workshop, teachers will be guided through hands-on projects that build strong cyber foundations within the classroom. Through a blending of robotics, programming, electricity, and elements of liberal arts, participants will be introduced to the opportunities, threats, responsibilities, and legal constraints associated with operating in cyberspace, as well as a foundation for further exploration into STEM and cyber-related topics.

The lessons provided in the workshop are designed to create an interactive, engaging learning experience that will motivate students. Participants will take with them classroom resources, cyber curriculum, and classroom instructional methods. A computer with a mouse is required for the workshop – one with either a Mac OSX or Windows 7 and up. Android OS, iOS and tablets will not work.

The cyber literacy workshop is just one way Bluefield College is continuing to develop its cyber program. The college introduced its first cyber security courses in the fall of 2017 as a concentration under its business administration degree. Soon after, the school’s faculty developed a curriculum to offer cyber security as a minor, and this fall cyber security will be offered to students as a major.
