Bluefield College's Fine Arts Community School has released its schedule of courses, lessons and camps for summer 2011.

 

In existence for more than 16 years, BC's Fine Arts Community School (FACS) is designed to enable local families and students of all ages and interests, including home-schoolers, to explore and study the arts with the guidance of mentors who have appropriate training and experience.

 

Classes, camps and lessons this summer will begin as early as May 12 with others beginning as late as July 11. The summer offerings include "Clay Beads," "Backyard Chickens Workshop," "Pottery," "Adventure Biology Camp," "Kids Summer Art Projects," "What's In Your Genes? DNA Seminar," "Criminal Justice Camp," "Math and Science Camp," "Exploring the Human Body Seminar," "Fine Arts Camp," "Preschool Fine Arts Camp," "Theatre Camp," and "Private Music Lessons."

 

Clay Beads

Learn how to use new tools and techniques with clay bead projects.

Thursdays 5:30-6:30 pm

Beginning May 12 for five weeks

Ages 8 and up

Instructor: Amanda Parks

Registration: $25, Tuition: $75

 

Backyard Chickens Workshop

Raise chickens and wake up to farm fresh eggs in your own backyard after hearing the experts in this two-hour workshop share experiences about buying chickens, building coops, feeding and caring for chickens.

Registration: $0, Tuition: $20

 

Pottery

Learn to manipulate clay by creative means to form functional and decorative ware. Learn hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques, as well as glaze applications.

Mondays 6:00-8:00 pm

Beginning June 13 for eight weeks

Adventure Biology Camp

Take a walk on the "wild side" and learn about our natural world by hiking, observing, catching, identifying, testing, and learning survival skills.

Monday-Friday, June 13-17

9:00 am - 12 pm each day

Ages: Rising 5th-8th graders

Instructor: Dr. Jason St. Pierre

Registration: $25, Tuition: $75

 

Kids Summer Art Projects

Kids will work on a variety of art projects and techniques.

Thursdays 5:30-6:30 pm

Beginning June 16 for four weeks

Ages 5-9

Instructor: Amanda Parks

Registration: $25, Tuition: $60

 

What's In Your Genes? DNA Seminar

Learn how to extract genes from your hair and cheeks and use advanced technology to grow your DNA and take a closer look at your make-up.

Friday-Saturday, June 17-18

9:00 am - 12:00 pm each day

Ages: Rising 8th - 12th graders

Instructor: Dr. Emily Lambert

Registration: $25, Tuition: $25

 

Criminal Justice Camp

Explore the criminal justice system and its three major branches and their functions through demonstrations by local police, SWAT, and canine officers. Investigate a mock crime scene and analyze the evidence.

Ages: Rising 8th - 12th graders

Instructors: Dr. Kelly Walls and Dr. Kim Farmer

Math and Science Camp

An adventurous study of the basic principles in chemistry, earth science, astronomy, physics, algebra, measurements, and conversions with lessons ranging from how a seed becomes a tree to making homemade yogurt.

Ages: Rising 3rd - 6th graders

Exploring the Human Body Seminar

Experience the wonder of the human body as you explore anatomy and physiology, the various organ systems, microscopy, and dissection.

Friday-Saturday, July 8-9

9:00 am - 12:00 pm each day

Ages: Rising 8th - 12th graders

Instructor: Dr. Jason St. Pierre

Registration: $25, Tuition: $25

 

Fine Arts Camp

Students will rotate through music, theatre and art each day in this fun-filled week of the study of the arts, which culminates with a program for parents.

Monday-Friday, July 11-15

9:00 am - 3 pm each day

Ages: Rising 2nd - 7th graders

Registration: $25, Tuition $125

 

Preschool Fine Arts Camp

Students will rotate through music and art each day in this fun-filled week of the study of the arts. Choose between a morning or afternoon session.

Monday-Friday, July 11-15

8:45 am - 12 pm or 12:15 pm - 3:30 pm each day

Ages: 4-5

Registration: $25, Tuition: $75

 

Theatre Camp

Under the guidance of the founders of Bluefield Youth Theatre, learn mask construction, stage makeup and set construction while preparing for a performance of Rudyard Kipling's "Jungle Book."

Monday-Friday, July 18-22

9:00 am - 3:00 pm each day

Ages: Rising 2nd - 6th graders

Instructors: Charles Reese and Rebecca McCoy-Reese

Registration: $25, Tuition: $125

 

Private Music Lessons

Private piano, voice, organ, saxophone, clarinet, tuba, trombone, trumpet, and flute lessons.

Days and times to be determined with instructor.

30-minute sessions one day a week.

Ages: 5-adult

Instructors: Sharon Zeigler and Chrisa Johnson

Registration: $25 registration, Tuition: $170 (10 weeks) or $90 (5 weeks)

 

Registration fees are non-refundable. If registering more than one person within a family, the registration fee is discounted to $15 per person. No registration fees are required for continuing or returning FACS students. Registration fees for classes and tuition for workshops are due by the start of instruction and may be mailed and made payable to Bluefield College, 3000 College Drive, Bluefield, VA 24605.
