Short-handed Rams handle UVA-Wise By Trey Wilson | January 4, 2013 | RSS Bluefield, Va. -- The Bluefield women’s basketball team returned to its familiar winning form on Thursday, earning a home win against UVA-Wise, 64-47. The Rams (11-4, 3-2 Mid-South Conference) bounced back after a loss to Virginia University of Lynchburg ended a four-game winning streak on Dec. 16. Bluefield only dressed six available players for Thursday’s contest, and five players spent at least 37 of the 40 minutes on the court during the game. The Rams outrebounded the Cavaliers (5-10, 2-4 MSC) 42-24 in the game, including a 20-6 advantage on offensive rebounds. Junior Janee’ Simmons barely missed a double-double, scoring nine points and totaling 19 rebounds, 13 of which were offensive. Senior Ashley White led the Rams in scoring with 17 points while playing all 40 minutes. She also added five rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Three other Rams scored in double figures, including Maryah Mazyck (13), Teqa McNeal (12), and Monique Robson (11). The Rams jumped out to an early 20-12 lead, but turnovers helped UVA-Wise respond with a 7-0 run to close the deficit to one point. Mazcyk drove down the right side of the lane for a lay-up and ended the scoreless draught. McNeal got a steal in transition and was fouled at the other end. After she sank a pair of free throws, the Rams led 24-19 and continued to pull away. Bluefield returns to the court on Saturday, hosting Pikeville (5-7, 2-3 MSC) at 2 p.m. The Rams have won all seven home games this season, and are now 3-0 in conference games at the Dome.
