Rams hold on for 8-5 win over Virginia Intermont

The Rams dominated the Virginia Intermont Cobras 8-5 for the night cap on Thursday at the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament in Kingsport, Tennessee after needing to come from behind early in the contest.

Joey Andrews started the game for the Rams on the mound, as the home team on the scoreboard. Immediately in the 1st, he had to fight out of a jam with runners at the corners. He safely grounded out the next at-bat.

The first three innings were slow for both teams with neither squad finding much offense to gain the first lead of the game.

The top of the 4th, Andrews gave up two singles to put runners on 1st and 2nd base, followed by a sacrifice bunt advancing the runners into scoring position. Tyler Turner would double to deep center field, scoring just one run as runners held. Next up, Carbone hit a deep left field sac-fly to score another Cobra run making it 2-0.

Pitching for the Rams in the next inning was Mike Newton. He replaced Andrews who went four innings giving up two runs on six hits.

In the 5th, Andrew Weaver smashed a double all the way to the center field wall. Goodyear reached first on an error by VI’s third basemen and Hynes reached via BB, making it bases loaded with no outs. Then, Cabral drew a walk on four straight balls cutting the Cobras lead in half 2-1. With Torres up to bat, he grounded to SS Cassady who bobbled the routine out resulting in two more runs for the Rams. 3-2 in favor of Bluefield.

It was “Double-Weaver Trouble” for Intermont in the same inning, as Travis Weaver stepped up and cranked a 2B to left field scoring two additional runs, making it 5-2.

Both teams were silent in the 6th and as the 7th inning rolled along, the Rams picked up the bats. With one out, Smurthwaite re-ignited his swing with a single up the middle followed by a walk putting two runners on.  A flyout and another walk, the Rams had the bases loaded yet again for the second time in three innings.  With another walk and 2-run 1B from Cabral, the Rams finished the 7th inning ahead 8-2.

The Cobras pulled one back in the bottom of 8th after two consecutive hard driven balls past the infield making it 8-3 with two outs. Thereafter, SR Bill Miller hit a RBI single to left and Schultz RBI singled to center scoring another two runs cutting the deficit to 8-5.

23 McQuade entered the game for one out in the 8th and struck the batter out to escape the inning and stop the potential big comeback from Virginia Intermont. Pitching with confidence, Josh retired the side and got the save en route to the Rams victory.

Rams will move on to play Union College again tomorrow (Friday) afternoon at 1:30pm.  The Rams will have to win back-to-back games over Union to advance to the Final on Saturday.
