Rams Face Challenging 2011 Soccer Schedule

Bluefield, VA—Spring may be just beginning but the Bluefield College men's soccer team already has their 2011 soccer schedule set to play.

Peter Dryer will enter into his second season as head coach of the Rams soccer team.

The team will play an even 10 matches home and 10 matches away under second year head coach Peter Dryer, where the Rams will play in six different states during the season.

"We are playing a very competitive schedule this fall, with teams from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), NCAA Division II, and NCAA Division III schools. We are traveling in Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Ohio," Dryer said.

The Rams will play their traditional 18 game season beginning with a scrimmage against Southern Virginia University on August 23 at East River Soccer Complex.

"Last year, we had the opportunity to play them in the pre- season and it will be a good test for us as we prepare for the regular season," said Dryer.

The Rams will take off running when they open their first regular season game against Shawnee State on August 27 on the road. Shawnee State is a Mid-South Conference member, which the Rams will join in 2012 and will be a good indication of the talent level in the conference. The Rams will also face some new opponents in the 2011 season.

"We will be playing a few teams this year that are new to the Rams' soccer schedule, including away games with Toccoa Falls, a National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Division I member and Chowan University a NCAA Division II member," said Dryer. "Each of these institutions also competes in the NCCAA, which Bluefield does as well. It's great to not only play teams that compete well but challenge us, but also institutes with a similar mission."

Washington and Lee will be the first home game for the Rams on September 1 at 7:00 pm at East River Soccer Complex. The Division III school game will be under the lights and will set the stage against NAIA school Truett- McConnell, which will face the Rams on September 3 at home. Also, the Rams will face Ferrum College who the Rams played last season and won 1-0 in Ferrum at home on September 7.

Another notable home game is against NAIA Mid- South conference member West Virginia Tech on September 28 at 4:00 pm. Homecoming weekend the Rams will host Tennessee Temple University on October 15 where the Rams will play in front of current students and visiting alumni.

The Rams will also face local rival Concord University in rematch of the homecoming match-up, where the Rams lost a close game 2-1. Concord will host the Rams on October 25.

"Even though they are not in our conference, it is always a battle against Concord (who is just up the road from Bluefield). It was a great game last year but we came up short; this year we will look to get that game back," said Dryer.
