Gibson throws three-hitter in 4-0 defeat over Montreat College
Men’s Baseball traveled to Kingsport, Tenn for the AAC Tournament to take on Montreat College in the opening round and defeated the Cavaliers 4-0 behind a solid pitching performance by David Gibson.
The Rams got on the scoreboard early scoring two quick runs in the top of the 1st inning. Torres led the game off with a stand-up double. He would score off RBI single from Smurthwaite. Later, Cameron Hynes singled to score Smurthwaite.
Both Gatewood and Goodyear had singles in the 3rd and 4th innings respectively, but were stranded on base at the end of each inning.
Rams’ ace David Gibson started the game for the Rams in the opener. He started off hot and got caught with two runners on in the 4th, but got out of the jam with a strikeout. He followed up by cleaning out the side in the 5th in a 1-2-3 order.
In the top of the 6th, Smurthwaite continued to do damage on Montreat by reaching first on a single. Later, Andrew Weaver sent a driven ball to left field sending Smurthwaite around third base to home plate, the RBI single would be enough to score another Ram run, making it 3-0.
Gibson went back to work in the 6th and retired the side consecutively for a second straight inning. He would retire three of four batters in the 7th inning, giving up a single to center to Jordan Sells.
Montreat’s starter TJ Fussell went 8 1/3 innings, striking out nine. Bluefield’s Gibson was credited the win to go along with a complete game, while striking out eleven and allowing only one walk and three hits.
The Bluefield Rams advance on to play the winner of the Union/VA Intermont game Wednesday night at 7:30pm.
