Rams baseball snags 2 of 3 games at TN Wesleyan April 18, 2011 | RSS Bluefield College Athletics Official Release Sports Information Office Bluefield, Virginia Rams baseball snags 2 of 3 games at TN Wesleyan The Bluefield College Rams baseball team took two out of three games against the Bulldogs this past weekend to continue its hot streak in the month of April. A crucial conference road weekend in Athens, Tennessee against rival Tennessee Wesleyan meant Coach White’s squad would have to make little mistakes and get the bats working early and often. His team did just that. On Saturday, in a 9-inning affair, the Rams would find themselves down early after a tough bottom of the 5th, where P Chastin Akers would allow five singles and five runs. The lead wouldn’t last long for TWC as the Rams had a rally of their own in the 7th. With two men on, Goodyear (4 RBI) would single, followed by Thruett’s double leading to two more runs. Entering the bottom of the ninth, the score was tied 7-7. After a single by David Bergan, Rafael Carlot stepped up and hit a two run walk-off HR to win 9-7. For the Rams, the momentum turned into motivation overnight for the double-header Sunday, where the two teams would play two 7-inning games. In game one of two, both teams started off extremely slow but it would turn into an entertaining last four innings of offense. Bluefield marked four runs each in both the 5th and 6th innings in an overall team earned peformance. Joe Gatewood would lead the way with four RBI’s while starting pitcher David Gibson would go the distance earning a solid complete game. Game two on Sunday would be another tight outing for the Rams as P Adam Hoyt would allow six runs, giving up only two earned runs on the afternoon. The game would go back and forth until the 5th inning. A great couple at bats by the Rams found SS Travis Weaver at the plate. He would double to center to extend the lead. The Rams would get one more run in the 7th when Goodyear’s double helped him reach base and would eventually score on Cabral’s sacrifice fly to center field. The 6-4 lead would be enough for the Rams to close the inning, the game and the three-game series. A huge away conference series win for Bluefield College over the Bulldogs, as it was the first time in five years the Rams have won a single game on TWC’s home turf. A late season resurgence seems to be in store for the Rams as try to squeeze into the conference tournament and a possible qualifier into the NCCAA National Championship in Mason, Ohio. Be sure to come out to Bowen Field this weekend and support Rams Baseball in their last home series of the season on Saturday and Sunday. Stay tuned for more news in Rams Baseball.
