Christian rock band The Almost will perform for BC's September 28 Coffeehouse. |
The Almost is an alternative rock band on tour promoting their second album, Monster Monster. The group's first CD, Southern Weather, debuted at number 39 on Billboard's Top 200 with a top 10 alternative radio single. That album also earned the band a spot on MTV's "Discover and Download."
A thoroughly road-tested band, The Almost's second CD features diversity, from the thudding stomp of the title track and "Young Again," to the stark acoustic blues and psychedelic jam of "Monster," to the techno-rock laced with tribal drums of "Books and Books," all about "the dark side of the human condition," and "battling your demons."
"It's about the 'monster' that lives inside of all of us, which we have to fight to get rid of," said drummer, guitarist and songwriter Aaron Gillespie. "It's a battle you live with every day. In the end, when that stops, the question remains, 'can you now live your life? Can you get all of who you are, can you find a place that makes you happy?'"
Remaining concerts in Bluefield College's Fall 2010 Coffeehouse Series, open to the public, include a November 4 appearance by Trevis Prince, whose music has been described as classic Motown with a fusion of modern day Pop, and a December 2 show by Andy Cherry, a singer, songwriter and worship leader from Charlotte, North Carolina.

Hosted each month, the Spring Coffeehouse Series features celebrated contemporary Christian singers. General admission for the public for each show is $5. Members of the BC family are admitted for free.
The May 6 show will take place in the field outside BC’s Dome Gymnasium and will highlight House of Heroes, a band that critics say "is about life-changing music" and not scene, genre or reactions from crowds.
"They don't want to sound like something else or to be like anyone else," said Christian music critics OneCubed.com. "This band wants to win over people because of the music they write and the emotions they invoke, period."
Led by front man and lead guitarist and vocalist Tim Skipper and joined by bassist and vocalist A.J Babcock, guitarist Jared Rigsby, and drummer and vocalist Colin Rigsby, House of Heroes is known for its enigmatic songwriting, bold epics, and clever chorus lines.
The group has played hundreds of shows with everyone from Silverchair, Relient K, and MxPx to Phantom Planet, The Rocket Summer, Simple Plan and Family Force 5. They'll make their debut at Bluefield College as part of a tour to promote their fourth CD, "The End is Not the End."

A native Californian, Danyew has been crafting and performing songs since he was 12. Because of his love for various genres and his ability to play numerous instruments, he says he feels like his music has multiple personalities. But, despite the diversity, the message is always the same.
"The simple truth is that God wants us to love each other," said Danyew. "Love is such a powerful thing, and God is shaping my desires to show His love through music...of all kinds."
The final show scheduled for Bluefield College's Spring Coffeehouse Series will feature House of Heroes on May 6. For more information, visit bluefield.edu/coffeehouseseries.

Before his career in music, Roberts, a 2001 Bluefield College graduate, worked on the family dairy farm and as a branch manager for a rental car company. But, in 2002 he traded cars for guitars and milk for music when he became a volunteer at Destiny Outreach Ministries, assisting in both the adult and youth worship. By 2006, the talented musician and singer was named associate pastor and youth pastor at Destiny.
"I simply want to be a reflection of who Jesus is in every way, and I hope that is evident in my songs and everywhere I play and sing," said Roberts. "Above all, I constantly focus and remember that before I am a musician, pastor, worship leader, husband, father, or any other roles I have, I am a Christian first, and I believe that integrity still matters."
In 2008, with the support of Higher Plan Music Group, Roberts released an EP, titled "Love's Revolution," which demonstrates his integrity and shares his desire to encourage listeners to grow closer to God.
"I don't want to be just an artist who blows into town and everything seems to focus around them," said Roberts. "I want to create and share songs with inspirational lyrics that will encourage and motivate God's people into a deeper relationship with Him. That is my mission statement."
While the Roberts appearance marks the last show for BC's Fall Coffeehouse Series, the school will begin its Spring Quick Shott Café Coffeehouse Series in January. "My number one passion is to connect with people, to entertain them, to stir up emotion in them, and to challenge them by sharing life from a different perspective," said B.Reith about his music that many say presents hope and sheds light into a decaying world. "There is something we're all yearning for. I'm just trying to help direct our attention to it, and music is the most powerful way I know how."
With influences ranging from Stevie Wonder to Lauryn Hill, B.Reith comes from a unique place that combines classic soul with modern hip-hop.
