The Class of 2012 will receive their diplomas next weekend and walk away with bright futures.

Graduating seniors have sent out their announcements, and caps and gowns have been picked up.

Students are excited about the direction their lives will take after graduation, but they are nervous at the same time.

“I think about taking on adult responsibilities such as paying my own bills,” said Katilyn Duggins, a senior from Waynesboro, Va. “And saving money for retirement, a house, and a car.”

Other students say they just fear what the future holds.

“I think about where I’ll live; my job; if I should or shouldn’t go back to school and get my masters,” said Yeda Duarte, a senior from Brazil.

Despite the fears, these graduating seniors are excited about what’s ahead.

“I’ll be glad to get a good job so I can support myself,” said Duarte, who plans on working as soon as a job opportunity opens up. So far Duarte has applied for jobs in Richmond, Va.

Duggins said it’s exciting to think about the plan God has for her and knowing that he has it all in control.

“I’ll also be glad that I can move back home whenever I want, and I won’t have any homework!” said Duggins.

Duggins plans to take the summer off to do odd jobs like babysitting, and to do some traveling.

“I’m thinking about applying for a VISTA position at the school and continuing my work experience in the business office,” said Duggins. “I’ve also applied at nTelos, Lumos, Schewels, Augusta Health, Target, and Hershey.”

Duggins said the thought of graduating is bittersweet.

“I’m ready to move on and fulfill my role in society but also sad to leave all the wonderful friends I’ve met over the years,” said Duggins.

Durate said she knows there will be things she’ll miss as well, but she’s excited about her future.

“It feels like I’ve finally conquered a challenge and getting rewarded for it feels great!” said Duarte.

Graduation will take place May 5 in the quad at Bluefield College.
