Bluefield- All the emotional buildup for 90 plus minutes was well-worth the wait for the Bluefield College Lady Rams as Pattison's OT free-kick builet beat Southern Virginia in extra time 2-1.
The first ten minutes of the match were slow for the Lady Rams, but the remainder 30 minutes were dominated by Bluefield in the opening half.
Even though being outshot in both halves (15-7 overall), the Lady Rams controlled possession and attacked on numerous occasions. Bluefield drew first blood in the match when Harvey found Pattison around the center circle. Pattison played a nice through ball to the left flank where Kelby Dove was running on behind the back line to receive the ball. Dove launched the ball from the 18 yards out far post to beat the keeper for the 42nd goal.
With no substitutes, Bluefield went into the halftime with a 1-0 lead. But for the first 20 minutes of the second half, Coach Snow's side struggled to connect passes. Several gaps opened for Southern Virginia in the attack halfway through the second frame giving way for the SVU equalizer.
With high winds, Southern Virginia's Riddle collected the ball and lofted a ball high over Muncy's fingertips towards to the far post. Muncy couldn't control the shot as the ball knocked off the post and into the back of the net drawing the score to 1-1.
In the 83rd minute, SVU's Melanie Guymon nearly put her squad ahead with the game-winner when she beat two Bluefield defenders through the middle. Brushing a BC defender off, she fired a laser off the crossbar and straight down into the six-yard box giving the Bluefield defense a chance to clear it away safely.
Bluefield would receive a huge blow in the 87th minute when D Danielle Barlow went into a 50/50 challenge and couldn't get up. She would have to be carried off and for the remaining minutes of the half and first OT period, the Lady Rams played with 10 players.
The first overtime period started slow, but as period started to dwindle down the Lady Rams picked up the intensity with two great looks on goal. In the 96th minute, Jahlisa Harvey received the ball outside the penalty box, but was fouled giving the Lady Rams a free kick opportunity from 22 yards away.
Up stepped Pip Pattison. She lined up behind the ball, drove the ball far bar as the ball nestled inside the post for the game-winning OT win. The winner gave the Lady Rams their second straight victory and Pattison's seven goal of the season.
The Lady Rams will hold on to the momentum as they prepare for a big conference match on Saturday versus Montreat College at home on Saturday. Stay tuned for more information on the women's soccer match as the game will be Senior Day at East River Soccer Complex.
