June 18, 2014
Prospective online degree students are invited to join the college at information sessions in Galax, Virginia, on July 15; Roanoke, Virginia, on July 16; Richmond, Virginia, on July 23; or Bluefield, Virginia, on July 28.
The Galax session will take place at Crossroads Higher Education Center (208 Cranberry Road, Galax, Virginia). The Roanoke session will be at the Roanoke Higher Education Center (108 North Jefferson Street, Roanoke, Virginia). The Richmond event will be at Bluefield College’s Richmond Center (One Paragon Place, 6800 Paragon Place, Suite 620), and the Bluefield session will take place at Bluefield College (3000 College Drive, Bluefield, Virginia). All sessions will run from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
“Each session will be an open house style gathering, allowing prospective students to attend any time between 4p.m. and 7:30 p.m.,” said Brenda Workman, an admissions counselor for BC’s Online Degree Program. “Guests may stop by any time during this period to pick up information about our online degrees or to talk to an admissions counselor.”
Designed to provide working adult students from all walks of life the opportunity to earn an affordable, convenient degree from an accredited institution, BC’s Online Degree Program offers five baccalaureate degree opportunities in management and leadership, e-business and entrepreneurship, criminal justice, human services, and nursing (RN-to-BSN). Special emphasis will be given during the open house events to the criminaljustice program, since the college just reintroduced this degree in its offerings for this fall.
“We’re excited about bringing back our criminal justice major in an entirely new online format,” said Junius Currier, director of online degree admissions. “We will be highlighting the CRJ program and our new online master’s degree in education, which launched last fall and is the first master’s degree opportunity at Bluefield College.”
In addition to information about online degrees, the open house events will provide prospective students with details about financial aid, the admissions process, and how to make online programs work while balancing a career and family. Light refreshments will also be served.
“Bluefield College’s Online Degree Program has the working adult in mind,” said Workman, “with degree programs offered 100 percent online and structured to provide students with all the necessary knowledge and skills for the job they want to pursue or the promotion they want to obtain. And, unlike most for-profit schools, Bluefield has a small student to teacher ratio (11:1), which allows our students to receive personal attention from professors.”
In keeping with a liberal arts education, BC’s online curriculum emphasizes a broad array of perspectives. Classes are delivered in an online format with close contact with professors who genuinely care about the students in the classroom. All faculty members possess a combination of academic credentials, practical experience in the field, and a commitment to the Christian heritage of the college.
Classes are offered in an online eight-week course format with lecture videos available for viewing on desktop computers, Internet TVs and mobile devices. In addition, online discussion boards and virtual classrooms allow students to receive the same caliber of education enjoyed by traditional on-campus students.
“This program is very doable for a working adult, offering two classes at a time for an eight-week session,” said Workman. “When those eight weeks are up, the next two classes start. If you don’t have any college credit, Bluefield College also offers the general education classes online that you will need.”
A participant of the military Yellow Ribbon Program and dubbed a “Military-Friendly” college by Military Advanced Education, Bluefield College has an articulation agreement with the Virginia Community College System, meaning all Virginia community college students with an associate of art or associate of science degree and a grade point average of 2.5 or better receive automatic admission into BC’s Online Degree Program.
