New Summer Camps and Classes for Kids

News kids summer camps and classes, featuring a variety of fun and educational summer activities for local youth, are starting soon at Bluefield College as part of its Fine Arts Community School.

Dedicated to providing quality fine arts instruction to the community since 1993, BC’s Fine Arts Community School (FACS) is a community service outreach program that enables local families and students of all ages and interests, including home-schoolers, to explore and study the arts with the guidance of mentors and professionals who have appropriate training and experience.

Among the summer 2017 camps and classes starting soon are Beginner Dance Camp, Intermediate/Advanced Dance Camp, Adult Dance Camp, Science Camp, Musical Theatre Performance Camp for Teens, Galaxy Paint Night, Private Writing Lessons, and Private Music Lessons, all detailed below in chronological order.

Preschool and Beginner Dance Camp
For first-time dancers looking to learn the basics of dance, stage performance, technique, stretching, and flexibility. Instruction will focus on ballet, jazz and summer arts and crafts.
· Dates: June 19-22
· Times: 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
· Ages: children under six
· Cost: $65 plus $25 registration fee
· Instructor: Ashleigh Farmer

Intermediate/Advanced Dance Camp
Offered for kids with any kind of dance experience. Instruction will focus on the techniques and foundations of dance and stage performance.
· Dates: Dates: June 19-22
· Time: 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
· Ages: six and up
· Cost: $75 plus $25 registration fee
· Instructor: Ashleigh Farmer

Adult Dance Camp
For dancers looking to enhance strength, flexibility, and balance. Instruction will focus on balance techniques, agility, strength, movement,
flexibility, conditioning, and jazzercise.
· Dates: June 19-22
· Times: 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
· Ages: 18 and up
· Cost: $75 plus $25 registration fee
· Instructor: Ashleigh Farmer

Science Camp
Enjoy a week of science adventures through new games and projects exploring the environment, butterflies, germs, molecular models, art, and rockets.
· Dates: June 26-30
· Times: 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
· Ages: 8-12
· Cost: $110 plus $25 registration fee
· Instructors: Dr. Emily Lambert and Dr. Joe Saunders

Musical Theatre Performance Camp for Teens
Explore the processes of preparing for a musical theatre audition all the way to culminating a performance. Work on diction, projection, breath support, singing, characterization, and movement. Conclude with a full-scale performance.
· Dates: June 26-30
· Times: 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
· Ages: 13-18
· Cost: $100 plus $25 registration fee
· Instructor: Dr. Alexa Schlimmer

Galaxy Paint Night
Enjoy a fun paint night with artist Marianne Jackson. Create your own work of art to take home. Painting supplies provided. No art experience needed.
· Date: June 30
· Time: 6:30 p.m.
· Ages: All ages
· Cost: $30
· Instructor: Marianne Jackson

Private Writing Lessons
Private writing lessons with an experienced writing coach and English instructor are now available for all ages and levels of skill. From help with standard grammar
or writing a research paper to a great letter to the editor or a short story or novel.
· Days and times determined with instructor
· Ages: All ages
· Cost: $65 (three lessons), $100 (five lessons), or $175 (10 lessons) plus $25 registration fee
· Instructor: Crystal Kieloch

Private Music Lessons
Private music lessons available for all levels of skill in piano, voice, flute, banjo and mandolin. Beginning and advanced students, including adults, are encouraged to participate.
· Days and times determined with instructor
· Ages: All ages
· Cost: $110 (five lessons) or $190 (10 lessons) plus $25 registration fee
· Instructor: Dr. Alexa Schlimmer (piano and voice), Linda Flowers (flute), and Ron Mullennex (banjo and mandolin)

All students must pre-register. A $25 non-refundable registration fee is due per student when registering for multiple day lessons, classes, or camps. If registering more than one person within a family, the registration fee is discounted to $15 per person.

In some cases, an additional supplies fee (i.e. art supplies) may be charged in addition to tuition. Tuition and fees are due by the start of instruction and may be mailed and made payable to Bluefield College, FACS, 3000 College Avenue, Bluefield, VA 24605. Payment plans are available.
