“This is going to be a weekend to reunite and reminisce with fellow alumni and to laugh and make music,” said BC’s Mark Hipes, director of alumni relations. “Regardless of era, ensemble or major, if you participated in music at Bluefield College, we want you to attend and to bring your friends.”

Registration will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, March 28 in the lower level of Harman Chapel, followed by a rehearsal at 7 p.m. and a reunion reception at 8:30 p.m., both in the lower level of the chapel. The first day will conclude with a video presentation of the recent performances of BC’s Variations at Carnegie Hall and the Lincoln Center.

“Attending the Alumni Choir Reunion will give me the opportunity to reunite with old friends, sing some wonderful music, and relive some of the wonderful memories created in Harman Chapel and at Bluefield College,” said 2011 alumnus Brian Wikle, who’s already made arrangements to come back to campus for the Choir Reunion. “Being in the choirs at BC is a big reason I came to Bluefield. I wanted to continue singing through college, and this was an excellent opportunity to do so. I was privileged to meet many wonderful people and make unforgettable memories. I am looking forward to seeing old friends and having the chance to sing with them again.”

Day two, Saturday, March 29, will begin with continental breakfast at 9 a.m. in Harman 103, followed by a second rehearsal for the weekend’s concerts at 9:30 a.m. Campus tours will be offered to alumni and friends at 10:45 a.m. on day two, followed by a third rehearsal at 11 a.m. After lunch, music faculty members will provide an update on the current programs and events of the Music Department, before a final rehearsal at 2 p.m. in preparation for the weekend’s performances.

Saturday evening will begin with a Music Alumni Dinner at 5 p.m. in Shott Hall, followed by the first of two weekend concerts, this one in Harman Chapel and titled “Gloria Deo.” Day two will end with an after-concert reception at 9 p.m.

The final day of the music alumni weekend, Sunday, March 30, will begin with a gathering at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Bluefield, West Virginia, including coffee and doughnuts, followed by the Alumni Choir’s second performance, a concert with current BC music students at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church.

“Bluefield College choirs brought me to this school,” said 2010 alumna Kara Woodward Wikle, another BC grad planning to attend this year’s music reunion. “I met strangers that became my family and sang music in new places that changed my life. Being able to sing with my closest friends in Harman Chapel again is a joy that is indescribable.”

Among the familiar songs alumni will sing for the concerts: “Be Thou My Vision,” “I Can Tell the World, “My Eternal King,” “If Ye Love Me,” “When I Can Read My Title Clear ,” “Zion’s Walls,” “For the Beauty of the Earth,” and the BC alma mater.

Directing this year’s Alumni Choir: 1974 alumnus Dr. Tim Sharp ’74, the executive director of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA). Before the ACDA, Dr. Sharp was dean of the College of Fine Arts at Rhodes College. Prior to Rhodes, he was director of choral activities at Belmont University.

After completing his associate’s degree at Bluefield College, Dr. Sharp earned a bachelor’s degree in music at Belmont University and a master’s degree and doctoral degree from the School of Church Music at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. In addition, he has completed post-doctoral studies at the Aspen Music School, the NEH Medieval Studies Program at Harvard University, and at Cambridge University, where he is a Clare Hall Life Fellow.

Alumni are encouraged to bring yearbooks and old photos to share during informal times of involvement. All alumni and friends of the Music Department are invited to attend. Spouses are encouraged to join former students for the weekend, and even children are welcome to attend. In fact, if enough alumni request it, childcare will be available throughout the weekend.
