Lewis to Present Keynote Address for BC's 27th Winter Commencement
Bluefield College will hold its 27th Winter Commencement on Saturday, December 8, 2018, at 10 a.m. in the Harman Chapel.

Bluefield College will hold its 27th Winter Commencement on Saturday, December 8, 2018, at 10 a.m. in the Harman Chapel. 96 undergraduate candidates along with 14 graduate candidates will receive diplomas during the commencement ceremony. Dr. Carolyn K. Lewis, the founding Dean of the Bluefield College School of Nursing will provide the keynote address for the ceremony.

Carolyn K. Lewis RN, Ph.D., NEA, BC, is a nurse with more than 45 years of experience in health care service and management, administration, association management, and education. Dr. Lewis is also a skilled leader in organizational transformation and has an extensive background in formal education strategies and substantive knowledge of state and national policy planning.

Dr. Lewis was the recipient of a gubernatorial appointment and served as Chair of the Kentucky Apprenticeship and Training Commission. In addition, Dr. Lewis received the Pioneer Nursing award from the Virginia Nurses Association, Governor’s Fellow Award from the Virginia Council of Higher Education and the Distinguished Alumna Award from Mason University. She was also an intern with Senator Pryor in 1993 working on the reauthorization of the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act.

Mr. John B. Beckett, Jr. will bring greetings to the graduates from Bluefield College’s Board of Trustees. A special prayer will be delivered to the graduates by Professor Doug Minnix and Professor Maria Zalduondo will provide a scripture reading. The ceremony will also include student addresses from Mr. Evan Abbey, of Bluefield, West Virginia, from the College of Sciences; and Mrs. Beverly White, of Bluefield, Virginia, from the School of Nursing. Special music will be led by Dr. Charles Priest and Dr. John Moir. 

Candidates for graduation will participate in the ceremony based on their fields of study. The ceremony will include candidates for Master of Arts in Education, Master of Science in Nursing, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees. Bluefield College President Dr. David W. Olive will confer the degrees.
