Bristol, Virginia- A late surge was not enough for the Lady Rams as Virginia Intermont beat #19-ranked Bluefield College 78-67 in Bristol in front of a packed out Intermont crowd on Wednesday evening.
The Lady Rams started the game on a 8-2 run including two nice defensive stops to keep the Lady Cobras off the scoreboard early. With 14 minutes to play in the first half, both teams started to heat up including four baskets, two by each team. Toni Cataldi was the Lady Ram who hit back-to-back three-pointers in that span.
Just as the Lady Rams were wanting to increase their lead, they turned the ball over on two consecutive possessions and Intermont cut the lead to 14-12.
Both teams struggled midway through the half to get consistent looks at the baskets, and each team turned the ball over twice in a two-minute span. Jasmine Washington came off the bench to pick up four straight points off a mid-range jumper and two free-throws to extend their lead to 19-14.
On the heels of breaking loose for a considerable lead, Virginia Intermont rallied with nine straight points to take their first lead of the game at 23-19 with 5:30 to play. On the next possession, Bluefield went inside to J. Simmons who finished a three-point play. Two more trips down the court- both teams nailed 3-pointers to notch the game up at 25-25.
With 3:30 left to play, Destiny Tolliver contributed in a huge way with two straight blocks, followed up by a Rams basket to make it 30-27 Intermont. Unfortunately, the good defense came at the beginning of a 9-2 run by the Lady Cobras to extend their lead 34-27. A late basket at the half helped Bluefield draw their deficit to 34-29 going into the break.
Into the second half, the two teams had combined for 24 turnovers. As the pace stayed the same in the final 20 minutes so did lack of concentration. Bluefield turned the ball over on 5 of 6 trips down the court, giving Intermont the chance to extend its lead to 12 points 47-35 with 15:05 left.
Intermont started heating up on their shooting as Bluefield started to lose control of the game. On a 10-0 run by Intermont, Bluefield finally broke the ice on the 18-point lead by pulling it back to 15 off a Rouse 3-pointer at 59-44. The spark gave Bluefield new life as Cataldi finished a four-point play to make it 59-48 with 7:30 to play.
Both teams exchanged baskets, as Bluefield pressured full-court to bump up the pressure on Intermont. The Lady Cobras buckled as the Rams narrowed the lead to 10 points with 6:15 left. On a missed 2nd opportunity by Intermont, BC responded going coast to coast with Cataldi capitalizing on another 3 point basket to make it just 62-56.
Bluefield still continued to struggle on the other end in controlling Bryan and Orrick in the post play as they would send Intermont to line twice in the 4:00 minute mark. On the insuing possession, McNeal fired another tray for Bluefield narrowing the lead to just four, 65-61.
Down to wire with 1:37, Monique Robson went to the line and made one of two free throws to make it 69-64 in favor of VI. Bluefield even had another two chances at the line, but both were missed by Simmons. In several hurried attempts by Bluefield and made free throws by Intermont, the Lady Rams couldn't get enough to come from behind for the victory. Bluefield had hot shooting by Toni Cataldi who went 6-9 from three-point land, but she was the only Lady Ram in double-figure on the night.
The Lady Rams will drop to 11-6 overall and 6-2 in the AAC. They will bounce back from the loss when they travel to South Carolina to take on new conference member, Columbia College, on Saturday afternoon.
Bluefield High Scorers: Cataldi (22) and Rouse (8).
