Winona Lake, Ind.- The Lady Rams dropped its opening-round NCCAA tournament game by just three points against Mount Vernon Nazarene 48-45 on Wednesday afternoon at the Orthopedic Captial Center on the campus of Grace College.

Both teams started off the contest struggling to score as after six minutes of play, the Cougars only led 2-0.

By the 11:00 minute mark, Bluefield still only scored four points and trailed 14-4.

Coach Baker and staff reverted to their bench to get some extra help and build some energy and momentum. With some fresh players, the Lady Rams went on a 13-2 run in the final seven minutes of the half.

Kia Gillard led the way for Bluefield in the first half with six points to help Bluefield only trail by three, 20-17 going into intermission.

Bluefield didn't lead the entire first half and part of the reason was due to their poor FG shooting percentage of 25%.

While Mount Vernon struggeled even more than BC (21% FG shooting), the Lady Cougars outrebounded Bluefield by six.

Mount Vernon got six straight points in the second half to extend their lead to 26-20.

Neither team was able to get much of a long streak to develop, as the 38-37 score stayed the same for nearly four minutes.

Bluefield picked up their second lead of the game on the next possession to go up one with 2:30 to play, 39-38 BC.

The Lady Cougars would come right back with two straight baskets to go up 42-39 after a Bluefield turnover.

The Lady Rams had a chance to take the lead on two different occasions but couldnt connect on either opportunity. Simmond did a great job to get an offensive rebound, but couldn't drop her FG attempt. MVNU sunk another basket to go up 44-39.

On the other end with under a minute to play, Rouse knocked down a two to pull it back within three points.

Bluefield would have to play tough defense and send the Lady Cougars to the free-throw line to play the '2-for-1' strategy for the final :30 seconds, but they couldn't pull from behind for the victory as they dropped their opening round to MVNU 48-45 in the final.

Bluefield only had one player shoot in double-figures on the afternoon as McNeal led the team with 11 points. Simmons led all players with a game-high 12 rebounds for the Lady Rams.

The ladies will play Roberts Wesleyan (NY) on Thursday morning at 8:30am EST.
