Pikeville, Ky.- With a one-point lead on Pikeville at the half, the Bluefield College Lady Rams struggled late as they were outscored by ten in the second half as UP pulled away and beat Bluefield 67-59.
Bluefield (5-4) got out to an early lead and was up by as many as seven (29-22) with 3:04 to play in the first half after a three-point shot by Toni Cataldi. It was one of four threes she sank in the first half in as many attempts, scoring all 12 of her points before recess.
Pikeville went on a 9-2 run to tie the game on a layup by Lanae Shouse-Stacy with 36 seconds left, but the Rams held a 35-33 lead at the half.
The Bears opened the second half with six straight points to regain a lead it would never relinquish. A 10-1 run in the middle of the half, on which five different players scored, stretched the lead to 15 (59-44) with 8:17 to play.
The Rams got as close as four on two occasions down the stretch, but unfortunately the Bears were able to withhold the late pressure from Coach Baker's side and get the win. The loss for Bluefield puts their record to an even .500 record at 5-5.
A huge difference-maker in the contest for Pikeville was the amount of times they were able to get to the free-throw line compared to the Lady Rams- a 28-11 margin. UP went 21-28 and BC went 6-11.
The Lady Rams were led in scoring by Toni Cataldi with twelve points.
The Lady Rams will return to action this Wednesday when they cross the town of Bluefield and take on Bluefield State at 6:00pm.
