Kids Explore Science at BC Camp
Kids love bugs and frogs, getting outdoors and blowing up things, and Bluefield College used those interests to teach local youth the marvels of math and science through a summer Math-Science Camp, June 23-26.

Part of the college’s summer camps and classes offered through its Fine Arts Community School, the weeklong Math-Science Camp was designed to introduce kids to the basics of math and science and maybe even more.
“We wanted the kids to experience some exciting experiments that have a lot of jazz and that have to do with math and science,” said Dr. Joe Saunders, a BC associate professor of chemistry who is teaching the Math-Science Camp. “That way the kids can have a better appreciation for the subjects.”
From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day, June 23-26, the young scholars, ages eight to 12, studied basic algebra, mathematical series, basic operations, biology, and chemistry. Through games and projects, they also explored fuel and propulsion.
“I know how to blow up a gummy bear now,” said Emma. “If I had the chemicals, I would.”
Using the wonders of math and science, they also created and launched rockets and took part in an egg-drop construction. The campers used science and chemicals to launch the rockets and math and measurements to determine the height of the missiles.
“My favorite thing I learned this week was how to build rockets,” said Paxton.
Like all Bluefield College Fine Arts Community School (FACS) offerings, the summer Math-Science Camp is designed to give area kids the opportunity to explore and study the arts with guidance from mentors who have appropriate training and experience.
“I liked the chemistry,” said Jaydon, “because I really, really like liquid nitrogen. It’s really cool.”
