Homecoming 2013: Fun for All

It’s not your typical alumni event, not even an occasion just for students. Bluefield College’s Homecoming 2013, Friday through Sunday, October 11-13, is a community affair with something for everyone, including former students, current students, and the community at-large.

Homecoming '13-Football-Pre

Local football fans are invited to join the BC family in cheering on the Rams football team during a Homecoming game against Belhaven University, Saturday, October 12 at 1 p.m. at Mitchell Stadium.

Homecoming '13-Reunions-Pre

Bluefield College will induct members of the class of 1963 into its Golden Graduates Society during one of several reunions scheduled for Homecoming weekend, October 11-13.

Homecoming '13-Tailgate-Pre
Prior to the Rams Homecoming football game, Saturday, October 12 at 1 p.m. at Mitchell Stadium, Bluefield College and Food City of Bluefield, Virginia, will host a tailgate competition with the best tailgate of the day winning a Food City gift card.

Based on the theme “Come Home to Bluefield College” and designed to bring the greater community together with the campus community, BC’s Homecoming 2013 schedule will feature a host of events open to the public, including intercollegiate football, a pre-game tailgate competition, a theatre production, a scholarship auction, and a campus-community worship service.

 

The Rams football team -- playing just its second full season of intercollegiate football since reviving the program in 2011 after a 71-year hiatus -- will battle Belhaven University at 1 p.m., Saturday, October 12 at Mitchell Stadium. Prior to the game, alumni and friends are invited to take part in a Homecoming tailgate competition, sponsored by Food City of Bluefield, Virginia.

 

“This year, Food City and the Bluefield College Alumni Association will bring added excitement to the Homecoming tailgate scene,” said BC’s Mark Hipes, director of alumni relations, “by recognizing the best tailgate at the game.”

 

Tailgaters interested in the contest must register by Wednesday, October 9 by contacting Hipes by phone at 276-326-4289 or by e-mail at The day of the game, contestants must check in at the Alumni Tailgate Tent to receive a tailgate competition flag.

 

Other Homecoming events open to the public include a performance of “Peter Pan” by BC’s Youth Theatre, Friday, October 11 at 7:30 p.m. in Harman Chapel and the traditional Scholarship Auction, featuring arts and crafts, jewelry, retail products, restaurant giveaways, tickets to sporting events and other items up for bid to benefit the BC student scholarship fund, Saturday, October 12 at 9:30 a.m. in Shott Hall. Homecoming will conclude with a Campus-Community Worship Service, Sunday, October 13 at 9:30 a.m. in Harman Chapel.

 

Homecoming activities exclusive to alumni include an alumni awards dinner and special reunions for Golden Graduates, teacher education alumni and members of the classes of 1933, 1943, 1953, 1963, 1973, 1983, 1993 and 2003. Golden Grads from 1963 and earlier will reunite Friday, October 11 at 5 p.m. in Shott Hall for a dinner program that will feature induction into the Golden Graduates Society and the presentation of Golden Grad medallions.

 

The teacher education reunion will take place Friday, October 11 at 6 p.m. in Easley Library and will feature a showcase of BC’s new master’s degree program in education. In addition, all alumni are invited to an Alumni Hospitality Gathering Friday, October 11 at 7 p.m. in the BC Alumni House and to an Alumni Breakfast, Saturday, October 12 at 8 a.m. in Shott Hall, featuring the annual meeting of the Alumni Association and the election of alumni officers.

 

The annual Alumni Awards Dinner will take place Saturday, October 12 at 6:30 p.m. in the Historic Bank Lobby in Bluefield, West Virginia, and will feature the presentation of a Distinguished Young Alumnus Award, Alumni of the Year Award, a Delgado Christian Service Award and a Gallery of Distinguished Graduates honor.

 

“We invite all alumni to come back to celebrate their graduation, while reminiscing about those good times at Bluefield College,” said Hipes. “Homecoming weekend is packed full of events for all alumni and friends to enjoy.”

 

Events exclusive to BC students include the traditional Homecoming Dance, Friday, October 11 at 9 p.m. at Fincastle Country Club. During the dance, students will crown the 2013 Homecoming Queen, King and Court.
