The setting has been set. On Saturday, Bluefield College football will embark on new waters after a long stint away from the game.
The Rams first scrimmage of the “new era” will kickoff at 7:30pm in a “Blue-White” inter-squad game featuring all Rams’ players on the 2011 roster.
For the past ten days, the Rams football staff, led by Head Coach Mike Gravier, has been hard at
work preparing for the 2011 campaign. The team has spent their preseason camp at Pocahontas High School with three-a-day practices, video sessions, positional meetings and much more.
To say it has been an easy road preparing for Saturday is an understatement. The Rams coaching staff has hit the ground running from day one when Coach Gravier was first named head coach back in July 2010. From recruiting, staffing, play, system and formation planning and implementation, purchasing of all new equipment from nothing to planning for the full inter-collegiate season in 2012.
This week in preseason camp, the team quickly found not only their roles and positions, but also was introduced to all the intricacies of college football. “I think the biggest transition for these high school athletes has been the speed of play”, added head coach Mike Gravier. “It is a much different game (level) than what these kids were playing just a year ago.”
The Rams will have a busy season, regardless of the team competing at the “JV” level for its first season (requirement through the NAIA). Starting with the “Blue-White” game, the team will then go up against two collegiate opponents on the road in their second and third weekends with Guilford College (8/27) and West Virginia Tech (9/5).
The “Blue-White” game will not only be a great way for the team to be introduced to the college and its fan base, but also to see what kind of support the team will receive from the local community. “We want Bluefield and the surrounding communities to be apart of Rams football just as much as the campus”, added Athletics Director Peter Dryer. “Football is a very popular sport in the southern portion of the two Virginia’s, and our desire (for Bluefield College) is to provide our community with entertaining college football.”
With a load of former local and regional high school football standouts, the Rams expect great support even in 2011. This season will be a great year for Rams football to “experiment” on and off the field, but one may still expect a quality experience at the beautiful Mitchell Stadium.

Mitchell Stadium will play host to the Bluefield College Rams football team, just a few hundred yards from BC’s main campus. Kickoff is set for 7:30pm, with a student tailgate set for 6:00pm at the stadium parking lots.
