The concert, open and free to the public, will feature foundational works for trumpet and harp predominately from the 20th century. The trumpet pieces will include Václav Nelhýbel’s “Suite for Trumpet and Piano,” James F. Burke’s “The Magic Trumpet,” Geoffrey Robbins’ “Mont Saint Michel,” and a collection of pieces composed by Dr. Priest, himself.
The harp pieces will include Domenico Scarlatti’s “Sonata in A Major” (originally for keyboard), Nicolas Flagello’s “Sonata for Harp,” and Maurice Ravel’s “Introduction and Allegro,” a formidable and seminal piece in the modern concert harp repertoire.
“As there is almost nothing explicitly written for trumpet and harp together, the audience will be treated to alternating solo sets from the trumpet and the harp separately,” said Thorburn. “However, toward the end of the program, we will join forces to perform Claude Debussy’s beautiful song, ‘Nuit d'étoiles’ (Starry Night), on harp and flugelhorn.”
In addition, the program will feature other Bluefield College music faculty, including Dr. Ben Thorburn, who will provide bass accompaniment for the harp, and Lisa Moxley, who will provide piano accompaniment for the trumpet. Concert pianist Harold Brown will collaborate with Thorburn on Ravel’s “Introduction and Allegro.”
